Fantastic 5 Jan 2010
Started off using a flint and magnesium and was shocked at the rate the flint wore down. This fire steel is just amazing, the quantity of sparks it produces are far superior than that of the flint. I also ordered a tub of MayaDust to use as lighting tinder, however, don't waste your money. The best thing I have found to use is my wife's cotton wool pads. All you need is one pad, which takes the spark first time, every time.

Worth buying 8 Oct 2010

WE have bought quite a few fire steels but this is far the best. Easy to use, good sparks. Our kids learnt how to make a fire using this steel. They would rather share this one than use one of the others we own.

This flint and steel is much more effective than my previous set I used years ago.
There are plenty of sparks when the full length of the rod is used and these seem very effective at starting flame...exactly what is needed.
At first I thought the red handle was too thick and chunky (the picture is deceptive) but I soon found this made it more comfortable to use and added strength to an already sturdy piece of gear.
