Book Description

8 Nov 2012 Bradt Travel Guides
Swaziland is Africa's second smallest country and its last remaining absolute monarchy. Dwarfed by neighbouring South Africa, this tiny, landlocked nation punches well above its weight in terms of both nature and culture. Author Mike Unwin explores the excellent wildlife reserves and wild hiking trails offering waterfalls, rock art and prolific flora and birdlife, and introduces travellers to the country's rich and varied landscapes. His personal insights, together with colourful anecdotes provide entertaining insights, give an insider's perspective. He divides Swaziland into four distinct regions, with detailed maps and itineraries for timescales from one weekend to one month. It includes a practical guide to neighbouring attractions easily accessed from Swaziland, including Maputo (Mozambique) and the Kruger Park (South Africa), both less than one hour's drive away. The natural history section offers far greater detail and more accurate information than found elsewhere, drawing on the author's extensive insider knowledge and experience.

More About the Author

Mike Unwin is a writer of non-fiction books for both children and adults, specialising in wildlife, travel and conservation. You can also see his writing in such newspapers and magazines as The Independent, Wanderlust, Travel Africa, High Life, Bird Watching and BBC Wildlife. Mike's awards include the BBC Wildlife/Bradt Travel Guides Travel Writer of the Year (2000) and the British Guild of Travel Writers Best Overseas Feature (2008). He occasionally pops up on such radio shows as Radio 4's Excess Baggage and Traveller's Tree.

Mike was born in the UK in 1965 and studied English at Manchester University. He worked for many years in first teaching and then publishing before deciding to chance it as a freelance writer. Nearly eight of these years were spent in southern Africa, notably Zimbabwe and Swaziland, which nurtured a love for this part of the world that now colours much of his writing. Though no serious scientist, Mike's passion for natural history has always led him to grub around in search of wild things - whether in the African bush or on an English beach - and inspires him to communicate this to others through his writing. He also enjoys drawing and photographing the natural world, and has contributed many images to both his own work and other people's.

Mike now lives in Brighton, UK, with his wife and young daughter. He keeps his African hand in as editor of Travel Zambia magazine, and nips off to other exciting places whenever people are prepared to send him there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific guide to Swaziland 19 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback
I can't imagine what a visit to Swaziland would have been like without this excellent book. The author clearly loves the place, and that enthusiasm combined with practical help and guidance, good maps (the satnav was a little perplexed on occasion)and informed background to the country's complex history and current position cocooned within South Africa helped make my trip a real adventure. Now I'm home, I'm enjoying reliving much of it by rereading the book.
It would be a great idea if all those employed in the Swaziland tourist offices were given a copy...
