More About the Author

Marcel Proust was born in Auteuil in 1871. In his twenties he became a conspicuous society figure, frequenting the most fashionable Paris salons of the day. After 1899, however, his suffering from chronic asthma, the death of his parents and his growing disillusionment with humanity caused him to lead an increasingly retired life. He slept by day and worked by night, writing letters and devoting himself to the completion of A la recherche du temps perdu. He died in 1922 before publication of the last three volumes of his great work.

Product Description

Can you imagine Mrs R laughing so hard that she dislocates her jaw? Swann takes a long time to rearrange Odette's corsage of orchids. Thereafter they do not call it making love, they "do orchids". If you're nervous of Proust, this is a good standalone extract to start with. --Sue Arnold, Classic Sounds

An excellent reading of the second half of Swann's Way. 2 Dec. 2001
By Zeldock - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this 3-disk set because, frankly, I couldn't imagine how anyone could pull off a reading of Proust's verbose and complex style. I was more than pleasantly surprised: Neville Jason does a fantastic job. His voice is polished and not overly dramatic; his phrasing shows a real understanding of both Proust's meaning and how best to convey orally his long sentences with all their long interpolations. The abridgment (which, according to the liner notes, was also done by Mr. Jason) is very sensitive to the original and retained far more of it than I thought was possible in a three-hour set. Period music is included, briefly and effectively, in the background. Since "Swann in Love" is more-or-less a self-contained novella within the great Recherche, this audio book would be an excellent way to get one's feet wet with Proust. My only caveat is that, Proust being, to say the least, a dense writer, this is not the kind of audio book that one can fully comprehend while doing something else. Just put your feet up and listen.

Ralph Richardson reads "Swann in Love" 14 Feb. 2012

Swann In Love [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]
by Marcel Proust (Author), Ralph Richardson (Narrator)

The great British actor, Ralph Richardson, gives the best reading of Proust I have ever heard. I believe this is taken from an vinyl recording made quite some time ago. I have been looking for a replacement for years, but have never found anything that was as good as Richardson's version. This is far more than someone reading a book out loud. Richardson, working from the original English translation, puts a spin on Proust's excellent work that is in itself a work of performance art.

Swann in Love 15 July 2007

The CD of the abridgment is well produced, and the narrator excellent. Unfortunately for me I found that Proust is just not to my taste.
