4.0 out of 5 stars teasmades are not dead!!, 28 Dec 2009

This review is from: Swan Teasmade White (Kitchen & Home)
I have had teasmades for about 40 years, all kinds of makes. Swan were always the best and my first Swan lasted about 20 years. Hope this does the same! It does the job quickly and quietly. Only 2 downfalls. The light on the clock is so bright blue it lights up the whole room, don't need a light on. I have to cover up the clock at night as I cannot sleep unless it is dark. 2nd, There is no alarm if you choose tea now, my original had one. So don't doze off again as being quiet you may miss it. Otherwise great.
Service was fantastic. I ordered 2 (one for each bedroom) One was faulty, phoned the company who sent out a new one the next day and picked up the faulty one. Excellent, 10 out of 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and not so good, 23 Jun 2010
By

The new version certainly improves on older models. It is stylish, has a better filling system, and boils quicker with plenty of capacity for two mugs of tea. It is easy to set time and alarm. They have done away with the old electro-mechanical clock which had a limited life and also became annoyingly noisy with age. But herein lies the downside. The new clock is entirely electronic giving an analogue display which is fine. However it is backlit giving adequate visibility in daylight but, as many others have said, it is obtrusive in the dark. This may not bother some but it disturbs me. The alarm set button is equally bright. I have heard the manufacturers can provide some sort of cover for the clock face which I will investigate but in the meantime I lean an A4-sized card against the machine face at night and this does the job. If the manufacturers could find a way of dimming or even switching off the backlights at night it would be a great improvement. Oddly, my clock also runs 4 or 5 mins a month fast but I can live with that.

Overall a good machine which does what it says on the tin but marred by the glare problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars STM100N, 12 July 2010
This review is from: Swan Teasmade White (Kitchen & Home)
Having just purchased a Swan Teasmade STM100N we would like to express our great disappointment in this product.

Why is it necessary for it to have such a bright blue light behind the clock face, illuminating the whole bedroom. Obviously the manufacturers are aware that it is far too bright, as they supply filters to place over the clock face.

This we have done, but we still find the light far too intrusive, and when the clock is set up with the alarm button activated, then the intense blue light on that button is even brighter, increasing the intensity of light even more.

We have always considered that the bedroom should be a dark, or at least a relatively dark, environment in which to sleep, and over the past 50 years whilst we have had several tea making products, we have never encountered the problems that we are experiencing with this product.

It can only be assumed that the designers of this `Iconic 21st Century Teasmade' have never tested it in their own bedrooms, or had the pleasure of using a non-invasive, subdued light, teasmade available in the past.

Judging from some of the internet comments, others are experiencing the same problems.

We consider, therefore, that this product is not fit for use by all but the heaviest of sleepers and we are seriously considering abandoning it after a couple of weeks use.
