Product Description

Coot Club and The Big Six by the celebrated novelist Arthur Ransome are two companion stories from his series of children s books set on the lakes and waterways of England and called Swallows and Amazons. Both the stories take place on the Norfolk Broads, and have the same cast of lively characters, led by six children, who become firm friends, sharing a love of wildlife and all things nautical. Set in the 1930 s, the television adaptation follows their boating adventures and daring escapades on the rivers and broads of Norfolk. The fun and adventure of a life afloat sparkles off the screen. There are secret enemies intent on getting them into trouble, strandings, ducklings and chases. The Ransome stories are a special mixture of realism and romance. Indeed, they were all inspired by treasured memories of his own childhood holidays in the Lake District and Norfolk Broads. The intricate detail in which he describes the boats and the wildlife of the English countryside is impressive and fascinating to both navigator and landlubber. This faithful adaptation captures all this with an impressive cast that includes Rosemary Leach as Mrs Barrable, John Woodvine as police Constable Tedder, Colin Baker as Tom s father Dr Dudgeon, Andrew Burt as the twins father Dr Farland, Patrick Troughton as the Eel Man and Julian Fellowes as Hullabaloo Jerry. Wonderful attention to period detail. Even the films colours are right for the period. Child actors excellent. Storylines as you would expect from Arthur Ransome. Bonus for Dr Who fans - Patrick Troughton and Colin Baker appear in episode 1 of The Big Six !. Buy it you won't regret it. A treasure.

If you like nature, sailing, kids and bad plots this fits the bill. I have sailed on the Norfolk Broads and this series captures the atmosphere perfectly. The sailing is technically accurate too. I'm old enough to remember England in earlier times. Once again the atmosphere has been captured nicely. The unusual Norfolk regional accent is evident and sometimes realistic. This is a classic and fully in the spirit of the Swallows and Amazons books.

I have recently read Coot Club and the Big Six to my children, so the stories were fresh in my mind when I watched this DVD with them.

I was a bit horrified in the initial scenes that quite so many bits of dialogue had been added in, mainly knowing nods in the direction of any adults in the audience. You expect subtractions when a book is filmed, but these additions seeemed entirely unnecessary. I also couldn't understand why Mrs Barrable had been written out of the Big Six.

Inevitably the plots and journeys felt a bit rushed, but the BBC props department had clearly gone all out on the period detail, and generally it was all well done. However, the film version of Swallows and Amazons is a lot more faithful to Arthur Ransome's original.
