Product Description

About the Author

Joan Russell was born in London and taught there for a few years before leaving for Tanzania, where she taught in various institutions over the next seven years, at the same time acquiring the basics of Swahili. Her interest in the language continued during a two-year attachment to the Curriculum Development and Research Centre in Nairobi. On her return from Kenya she completed a degree in Language and Linguistics at the University of York and stayed on there to carry out sociolinguistic research on Swahili and its functions. This entailed regular extended visits to eastern Africa. She became Senior Lecturer in linguistics and African studies at the University of York. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

When it says "audiobook" don't be fooled into thinking a cassette and a book are going to arrive on your doorstep. It literally is just a cassette which can make learning the language quite hard. The cassette itself does have an accompanying book I believe, so it's best to purchase them together as they are great for learning Swahili. Personally though, I would recommend buying the book, the cassette and a trip to East Africa for those who really want to the language!

I found this book fairly easy to use. It was suitable foe geginners like me because it consist of everyday words and methods of pronounciation.

Good but not great 28 Jun. 2001
By "xfilesds9" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A good beginning book but somewhat thrown together. The dialogues and explanations were good, but the exercises weren't particularly useful. It confused me when it said to not make "baba" sound like "barber". It was obviously written for British people and I often found myself reading with a posh English accent. Oxford, actually. But it was still a good book to learn dialogue and noun classes with. Good Luck : )

swahili (Audio) 8 Oct. 2005

You need to have the book for this tape. The tape has no translations and refers you to the book. That being said I think this might been worthwhile from what I listened to, unfortunately I don't have time to order the book before I go to Africa.
Easier to use than other ones 16 Feb. 2014

I wish it was still in print. I'm overseeing seven adults learning Swahili. The are not learning through a book method but it is good to have a reference book to answer the "Why" questions. This book is easy to use. I would recommend it.
