Product Description

Tosca's first album, Opera, was something of a hit-and-miss affair. While some tracks were bona fide, genre classics (debut single "Chocolate Elvis" has been hugely influential), others meandered along with no particular purpose. With Suzuki, Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber appear to have found their rhythm. The chilled-out formula developed on Opera is explored in greater detail. Heavy dub sounds and chunky downtempo breaks nestle side by side with gentle bossa beats, sun-kissed guitars and heavenly vocal snippets. Each track is well defined, delicately crafted and excellently produced. The galloping bossa nova of "Boss On The Boat" and warm organ sounds of "Honey" are particular highlights, while the tinkling pianos and sun-drenched guitar solos on "The Key" evoke images of infinite Ibizan sunsets. Tosca's warm and comforting soundscapes are perfect for winding down after work and excellent for banishing everyday stress. Few tracks stand out, though over the 70-minute duration you'd hardly notice. Taken as a whole, Suzuki is an intoxicatingly horizontal, stoned groove of some distinction. --Matt Anniss

5.0 out of 5 stars Heard this playing in Debenhams! Awesome. 22 July 2000
Format:Audio CD
I have discovered the music from Tosca through various compilations such as Future Sound of Jazz, but now it's time for the full album. Suzuki is filled with 11 tracks, and if you're looking for that typical dreamy future jazzistic Tosca lounge sound, you won't be disappointed. And dreamy it is ! That typical smooth trippy music, with light dreamy whispering voices on top is omnipresent. Smokey indeed ! I especially like "Orozco", with a slow smooth fat funky oldskool bassline lithered with dreamy chants. Or take"Busenfreund" for example, going more into the atmospheric lounge-houze directions with moody keys all over. "Ocean Beat" is here too, which is by now already a classic essential lounge track ! "John Tones" and "The key" explore more into future jazzy soundscapes, again super dreamy for sure! Finally, the delicate soundscape of "Peartoff" closes the Tosca album. Yes, it's lounge time with Tosca, the Suzuki album is fully packed with warm smokey music you'll enjoy for hours! It proves once again that the Vienna scene is alive !

4.0 out of 5 stars Polished trip hop for a chilled evening in. 22 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Cleanly produced melody driven grooves from Richard Dorfmeister and some other guy I'm not familiar with. More ambient hip hop or trip hop or hip trop or whatever we're supposed to call it these days. If you've heard the K&D sessions this may sound like more of the same. If not go out and buy that first. This is background music really. Vocally samples replace the tweaks, swirls and scratches of Dorfmeisters collaborations with Pete Kruder but worth a listen.

Looking for some cleverly structured, tightly played, wonderfully laid-back music that avoids the boringly lush waters that sink many of the current flood of “chill-out” albums? Well… you’re here! Tosca’s (aka Richard Dorfmeister’s) skills as a serious electro-jazz/hip-hop innovator get the “easy listening” make-over to produce an album that’s underlying complexity augments rather than destroys its melodic content. The end result?... a record you’ll play over and over again because you keep finding more and more layers behind its inherently “catchy” tunes. A sell-out?… well if making high-class tracks that keep drawing you back for more is a bad thing then we’ve got our definitions wrong. Rather a brilliant celebration of what studiously crafted & beautifully atmospheric studio music is all about.
And, if you want more, look no further than disc one of his two CD follow-up – “Dehli 9” – which extends the boundaries of “Suzuki” even further. Get both, play them back-to-back, and revel in two hours of some of the best sounds around.

5.0 out of 5 stars K&D style vibes for the 21st century 14 Jun 2000

If you liked the K&D Sessions but thought it sounded a bit dated, then this is for you. Morcheeba vs. Massive Attack mixed by Afterlife. Can't be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Chill-out album 22 Mar 2000
I listened to this round a friends house and bought it the next day. It is perfect for chilling out to. It is a mixture of nostalgic, soft tunes and some interesting, slightly ambient ones too. If you like top background music you can sleep to, and also "different" tracks to block out the world whilst travelling on the tube to, it's all on here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 19 May 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is a dark album, very chilled and down-tempo. At times drifting into the faintest of sounds and ambient moods.
I found it beautiful, and has some very funky beats at times. A must for K&D fans or anyone riding the "chillout" wave at the moment.
