LOVE IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT! Its the eve of his first day as the new kid in class at the big city high school, when Yamato finds himself smitten with the local rising star of track and field. However, any doubts he will ever catch another glimpse of such beauty are promptly squashed when she shows up at his aunts boarding and bathhouse… As are his hopes of impressing the driven hottie!! Two people could not be more different! And as Suzuka remains completely uninspired by Yamatos cheerfully irresponsible nature, things progress from bad to worse with record breaking speed. Throw in the antics of a handful of high school stereotypes, and the kids completely out of his league! Love may not be a spectator sport, but Yamatos sitting things out on the sideline.

It is easily one of the best romantic anime I have seen, perhaps RUmblng Hearts coming close. The problem is this shows like marmite you either love it or hate it.

The story is about an out of town lad who moves to the big city to go to High school and on his way to his Auntie's residence he sees something that catches his eye and becomes one of the main focuses of the story. This dvd is only the introduction to a story that has a lot of twists and turns before taking its final path. The characters have traits that everyone can relate to as well.

Check this out if you like an anime that is addictive but makes you churn when it goes down a path to what you didn't want or expect, it can be a bumpy ride but in a good way, its more of a bumy ride for Yamoto the series main character though, if your a fan of romantic anime, this is a must see.

The heartbreak of love and the pressures of school life are both crammed into the romatic anime that is Suzuka. Yamato has just moved in with his Auntie at an all girl bath house (lucky sod) and he has fallen head over heels in love with the school's number one athlete - Suzuka. Only thing is - she hardly realises he exists. So to try and win over the girl, Yamato tries his hand at sports and finds that he has a hidden talent when it comes to sprinting. Not only this, but he soon becomes the object of love and admiration from TWO other girls at school (I officialy hate this guy), while Suuzuka battles with her conflicting emotions over him.

For an anime that begins very much in the same vein as your typical harem anime such as Love Hina, Suzuka proves to be nice romantic show that has some sports elements thrown in for good measure. Despite it's soppy rom-com elements, Suzuka is very much a guys anime as the story follows Yamato's perspective and his yo-ing emotions for Suzuka and the other girls who enter the fray. Furthermore, it is often unclear what the female characters (especially Suzuka) feel about Yamato, thereby sticking with the 'guys anime' feel of it.

The animation in Suzuka is 50-50. Sometimes it can look gorgeous and other times it can look drab and dull. The character designs are quite good, but the background art is very dull. This volume contains the first 4 episodes of Suzuka and while the sporting elements of the series are not as central to the story at the moment, there is a fair amount of heart pounding romance to enjoy. As can be expected, this isn't an anime for people looking for action violence and gore, but it is a half decent rom-com that can be enjoyed if you fancy a bit of a change. Overall, Suzuka isn't anything ground breaking or incredibly original, and it doesn't try to be either. It is pure unashamed romance that proves to be very likeable and rather riveting at the same time.

In the past, I have seen many cases in which a movie is far below the quality of the book it is based on, but in the manga / anime world, I have not seen such disparities. Until now! Everything that is great about the manga is missing in the anime; it is almost as if they did it on purpose. The manga has several characteristics that make it special: characters with great energy, beautiful drawings, outstanding humor for adults, and some picaresque situations.

The anime is slow paced, and at times it even seems like the DVD is paused, because nothing is happening. To make matters worse, the tone of voice of the characters is as dull as can be, even with the Japanese audio. The graphics in the anime are way below par, and do not even come close to the crisp drawings that make the manga special. But maybe the worst flaw of all is that the anime presents a "sanitized" version of the story, and therefore, in their effort to control the nudity and humor with an adult tone, loses its charm.

I do not recall being this disappointed with an anime in a long time, especially after being pleased by the manga. My recommendation should be clear by now, stay away from this production but do check out the manga.
