Because I'm hypothyroid I've found that a lower-carb balanced diet works best for me and am commited to that as a lifestyle/health choice. But finding foods that fit in with those perimeters without sacrificing taste and quality isn't as easy as it looks. Atkins recipes are blah and that follows for all the other books by doctors - they're not interested in taste or living, they're making a 'regime' for you. Suzanne is clearly more like me - a foodie, with lots of French relatives who are also foodies ;o) We ENJOY eating and enjoy being healthy and fit and see no reason why they can't go together. So here's a book full of delicious, satisfying fare to tempt even a non-dieting palate - my naturally slim-n-muscled husband loves her lemon chicken especially.
But the cool bit is if you simply plan a week's meals from this as a cookbook, you'll lose weight and feel better by the weekend. The 'fog' will lift, the cravings will go, you'll feel in control and inspired. Sure, you'll have a few 'caffeine withdrawl' days and if you're used to riding the sugar rollercoaster the more natural rhythms will feel 'low energy' to you but by the weekend those will be history and in another week's good eating you'll wonder why you didn't do this years ago.
My one criticism is that the recipes aren't tailored to busy/harried moms of 4 with scant interest in cooking. BUT she's addressed the quick-n-easy aspects in subsequent books and all of her books, including this one, give excellent instructions and guidance on everything from buying produce to basic cooking skills. Suzanne taught me how to parboil garlic, not Mom ;o) And for those in the UK/Europe, the page in the back with equivalent foods and measurements is brilliant - I refer to that even when I'm cooking from (gasp) other cookbooks or recipes from the web.
One you won't regret buying and will probably be hooked on the series - I collect Suzanne's cookbooks and consider them gifts from one hot-n-healthy mama to another ;o)
ps for all the curious, 140 at 5'8', UK size 10 for 4 years now down from a high of 206, UK size 18. It does work ;o)
