    Suunto t3 2 Jan 2011
    By Shark
Have owned this HRM for a couple of years now, so I thought it was about time I wrote a review! I have the original t3 unit from 2008 (i.e. NOT the t3c/t3d - the 'c' reads data from a cadence pod, and the 'd' comes with a dual belt which connects to commonly used gym equipment)

I have found this unit to be excellent in all respects. Firstly, I would find myself disagreeing with reviewers who say that this unit is 'cheaply' built... it is far from that. Sure, the unit is very light in weight, the point being that we have to wear the damn thing while we're running, cycling, swimming, sweating up mountains etc. This type of unit, built from ABS and stainless, with a flexi rubber/resin strap, are perfect for those activites - it's so comfortable and light to wear that you can forget you're wearing it. Those of you who have ever run a marathon with a stainless steel diving watch slamming around on your wrist will know exactly what I mean!

This is NOT a watch, it is a heart rate monitor for wearing while undertaking cardiovascular/endurance training, and as such, its very light weight is a design feature. Mine has been on and off the bike, in and out of the pool, and on and off my wrist several hundred times - no screws have come loose or fallen out, it has remained completely waterproof, and there is not the faintest sign of any scratching on the screen, I would think this latter point is really rather down to how much abuse we subject our kit to. Maybe if you're someone who might throw their monitor into the bottom of a sports bag or locker, then a screen protector may be a good choice for you.

I use mine with bike pods and PC Pod (now called Movestick, although it is the same thing) and they all connect up together flawlessly every time I use them (at least five times a week). This combination gives me all the training info I need - heart rate (current, min, max, avg), zone timings, interval training sets, Training Effect, all my speed and distance data, and 15 logs at a time.

I cannot fault this unit at all, and as mentioned, I have used it practically every day for over two years now. I would highly recommend it.

I used the Garmin Forerunner 305 for a couple of years, before I bought the Suunto t3d with footpod.

For me, the major drawback of the FR305 was the speed measurement, in particular when running intervals. The first 100-200m of an interval, the GPS based instantaneous speed measurement is not very reliable. Secondly, I needed a watch with a design that did not look too spacy in a shirt-and-tie environment.

The t3d does not have the two drawbacks just mentioned. The measurements of distance and instantaneous speed are accurate, after just five steps of an interval, the speed measurement is reliable. The watch is easy to calibrate: run a known distance in a usual pace, and enter the distance.

According to some reviews I read on the web, the glass scratches easily, so I bought a ZAGG Invisible Shield, which I applied before using it.

The display is not very big, and some of the information is written in fairly small letters and numbers. It took a while to get used to reading the information while running. I chose a watch with black figures on white background, because I read from reviews that the information displayed on the watch with white figures on black background was nearly impossible to read. Speed is measured in km/h or miles/h, and not min/km, so that took a bit to get used to as well. The t3d does not have the smooth and flexible interval training functionality that the FR305 has, but I have learned to dispense with that.

Training logs are transferred to PC via a USB movestick. With the t3d, logs are stored on the web page [...], which is a sort of hybrid between SportTracks ([...]) and Facebook. I used SportTracks in my Garmin days, and the analysis possibilities of SportTracks are far superior to those on [...], which I find is the only significant drawback.

All in all, the Suunto t3d is a great watch, and I would highly recommend it to runners with similar requirements regarding functionality.

    Suunto Excellence 4 Sep 2010
I own this watch, and it is my third Heart Rate Monitor/Running watch. I have previously owned Nike, and Polar HRMs.
I have to say this is by far the best. It is stylish yet tough, and I wear mine as an every day watch, which is testament to its comfort.
    The functions include
Realtime Training Effect, levels 0 - 5. This I believe is unique to Suunto. It takes the data you enter i.e AGE, WEIGHT,HEART RATE and Amount you train.. and gives you a realtime training effect from 1-5. (1 being aerobic, 5 being seriously hard Anoraebic)I love this as its the incentive I need to go that extra mile.
Current heart rate, average and maximum heart rate.
Real-time calories burned, as you are exercising.
Three-tier zone training system with alarms - these are used for "post exercise" analysis. The Suunto T3 will provide the user with: time below Z1, in Z1, in Z2, in Z3 and above Z3.
1 x adjustable HR limits with alarms. This is used WHILE training to alert you when exercising too hard or too low.
All of the functions are valuable and once you have one of these watches you'l wonder how you trained without it.
I defy anyone to wear it and not improve their fitness.
P.S. Suunto supply the U.S Military with watches.
