5.0 out of 5 stars A true convert 10 April 2014
By Sim256

I have always used Polar heart rate monitors and been happy with the performance. My current Polar was replaced by the company when one of the buttons racked leaving it open to the elements. It has served me well in many countries and in some of the most arduous conditions available. Recently I noticed that it was not keeping track, the heart rate would drop to zero or accelerate to extremes. Not really conducive to the training that monitoring that I required.

That is in the past, this is the now. I know the brand Suunto very well as they are my preferred computer for diving. I have to be honest I had never thought of looking for a brand other than Polar for heart rate monitoring. I came across the M5 whilst looking for a new diving computer for my wife. I read the reviews on Amazon with interest and having had a monitor that had more functions than I was ever going to use, I was interested in what the M5 had to offer. I won't repeat what you can read from the description just to say that if you are a motivated person then this is perfect for people that want to maintain or improve their fitness or weight.

The other reviews say that the screen is to dark. I am lucky enough to live in a sunny country. If I am doing circuit training indoors then it does take more than a glance to read the screen. That said, there is a very easy fix to increase the contrast of the screen, it is posted all over the web, all I would say is have a look at the display inside and decide for yourselves before you start using it for training as it will delete your logs if you later choose to reset it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for beginner in sports 17 April 2014
I wanted to get in sports to get fitter, healthier and loose weight but did not want to hire expensive coach. Therefore I looked at couple of choices from major manufacturers of training computers and decided to go with Suunto. After using it for a month now I see it is a complete solution for training and achieving your goals. You set your goal either to loose weight or to improve fitness. According to your personal data and your current fitness level the watch makes training program. During training it provides real time guidance weather to go slower or faster. Also there is Movescount.com website where you can upload your training data and compare it with other sporstmen.

It is a good watch, it has a lot of options but the problem is it has not light, so when it is dark you cannot see anything in the watch's screen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Suunto M5 10 May 2013
By Ron - Published on Amazon.com

The watch is comfortable, with a large display screen, making it easy to see the time.
Initially the watch is confusing to operate, however with practice it becomes second nature.

When in exercise mode, measuring your heart rate if you're not running, but doing strength exercises such as push ups and pull ups etc. the movement of your wrists against the buttons generally turns the exercise mode off. This is a disappointing feature.

Whilst running, there is no feature for the watch to take lap times, a basic functionality I assumed the watch has.

Further to this, the watch does not contain a stop watch unless you enter the exercise mode. Another feature I find quite disappointing.

The application suunto uses (movescount.com) is extremely basic, with minimal functionality. One may as well not use it.

However, when entering exercise mode, ones heart rate is picked up relatively quickly and I believe it to work quite accurately.

Overall this watch is extremely basic. It does what you need it to do - Tell the time, monitor your heart rate, and times your exercise duration.

If you're new to heart rate monitors and are seeking a basic heart rate monitor, I would recommend this watch, however for the same price I'm sure you can get better watches with more functionality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Heart Rate Watch 10 Jan 2013
By JKL - Published on Amazon.com

Ive had it for a month and I really like it. I just wanted something accurate and reliable to track my heart rate during workouts.

Good:
The heart rate is really accurate
Tracks average heart rate and max heart rate, during a workout
The watch and strap is comfortable

Bad:
Sometimes it takes a while for the heart rate to be picked up
The chronograph is just start and stop, so you cant track laps.
The Movestick doesnt work with my macbook pro running OS X 10.8.2 so I cant use it.

3.0 out of 5 stars So far so good 5 Jun 2013
By Eric - Published on Amazon.com
Pros:
Accuary real-time heart rate
Comfort heart rate belt
Big and clear numbers
Just fit screen size for a running sport-watch
Light in weight
Battery replaceable, no service call is required

Cons:
Costly accessories
Not supporting ANT+ accessories by other brands (M5 is compatible with Suunto ANT only)
Without stand-alone time lapping function
Optional GPS pod is too big, not convenience at all for running (hiking is ok)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product but pricey 16 May 2013
By Willard Smith - Published on Amazon.com

I've owned a lot of heart rate monitor/watches and Suunto is by far the best. I have both the M2 and the M5. The batteries are easily replaced and are the same for both the watch and the transmitter. I love the large numbers for my aging eyes and the chest belt is very comfortable. Most importantly, I know from experience that Suunto stands behind their products 100%. There are only two cons: it's pricey and there is no pause button (at least that I've been able to find) while exercising.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Look... Functional.... Basic 10 Sep 2013
By CV - Published on Amazon.com

Other watches at this price level are more intuitive and user friendly than this Suunto model.

Useful but could be cumbersome to operate on the go.

Looks great! Functional.

Used it for INSANITY for 6-weeks straight.

I will recommend this watch if you simply want to monitor your heart rate and calorie burn. Beyond that spend a little bit more for the more intuitive and user friendly versions.
