This is my first heart rate monitor after more than 15 years and i have to say things have progressed significantly. I bought the running pack with a foot pod that tracks approximate distance (it errs up to about 3% if there's climbs and descents on the track).
The first thing i should note is that the watch is smaller than it looks in the pictures and i thought it looked better in the pictures. But the looks are not why i chose it anyway. It's really light and it doesn't bother me at all while running and the HR strap is also much much much more comfortable than i remember this things being.
In my opinion this watch is not very useful if you're not going to use it with a computer and the Movescount portal. The setup was a pain though as it didn't connect without manually locating and installing the driver for the usb dongle (using Win7, haven't tried it on a mac yet). This is a major blow as someone with less computer experience might not be able to connect it at all. But once that is settled, it has always connected without a problem and it synchronizes with Movescount in about a minute. There you can set activities that you'll use the monitor for and up to 5 different screens you'll want to see during these activities. There are presets for running and training, but i customized it right away. For each screen you can choose two displays, for example heart rate and time or speed and distance or any combination there is. The outer rim can display recovery time or heart rate percentage. You can also set up two interval timers and even a whole training program (haven't tried that yet).

I have read both of the review's that have been posted here and was a little nervous due to the extreme difference between both of them.
I'm pleased to report that i fully agree with the 5 star review,i had no problem with using the watch and found the instruction's clear and easy to follow.
The monitor was very accurate and the band for the chest was comfortable and did'nt slip or cause any problem's.The watch itself is easy to read and i love the fact that it include's recovery time's based on your heart rate and detail's that you provide of your age and weight and the intensity of your run.I have invested in the pod which should arrive soon and i'm looking forward to using it.
Just a note that i'm a female trail runner and the watch is not too big on my wrist.

This is a good basic fitness watch allowing you to monitor your heart functions, and with the footpod (sold separately), your running speed -average pace and current speed, distance, cadence (strides per minute). It's very useful for cardiovascular training (but not swimming/diving -you need a different belt).
Generally speaking it is intuitive to use so the absence of a full paper manual is not a massive problem. The 'tap' function (where you tap the face of the watch to record a lap) is useful for sweaty hands but I would prefer better buttons (these are okay but there's no tactile feedback -like a click- to assure you they were pressed).
I really like the aesthetic of the blue watch but its depth (i.e. face to back) makes it look slightly too bulky.
There a number of minor issues with using the watch: to use the stopwatch you need to enter one of the exercise modes (no single press option), there's no countdown timer (but there is an interval timer but again it's a hassle to set). Both of these would be useful as general watch functions. It's also exceedingly difficult to perfectly set the time! You have to hold the middle button for approximately two seconds as the minute changes when computer synchronisation would have made more sense. There's only one alarm (and the current time is not displayed as you set it).
The fitness planning functions (controlled through Suunto's Moves Count site) are very basic, especially compared to the Suunto Ambit, which has apps. You can also use it with a GPS pod and a cycling pod (neither of which I have tried).
Personally I found the Suunto software and sign up to Moves Count easy to manage (it only wanted an email/username and password to begin with), although I'm aware other people have had problems.
A good, well-built fitness watch that could be very good if Suunto ironed out the problems.

I love the watch however I am having problems with the Heart Rate Belt. After a couple of uses the belt has stretched and doesn't give a good fit or hold its position. The signal between the watch and HR monitor is patchy so doesn't always give a true measure of the training completed. I do High Impact Cardio classes, e.g. Les Mills Body Combat, and Toning Classes, e.g. Kettlercise, Les Mills Body Pump so this is becoming an issue.
Otherwise the dial is clear and simple to read. The light function is poor as attempting to read it in a darkened Spin studio is a challenge.
Overall a great watch let down with a poor Heart Rate Belt thus only three stars.

easy to set up, synced very quickly, does everything I need. Having the ability to work out your own set up and display is a great idea, loads of algorithms already done that you can download but you never really know how good they are.
