3.0 out of 5 stars Tackling "Tick Box" Sustainable Architecture, finally..., 25 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Guy and Moore have produced a timely text which challenges designers to engage with social scientists in order to extend their understanding of sustainable architecture. At the same time, they point out that the "science" of sustainable resource use, with all its tools and technologies is socially constructed and serves certain groups self-interests.

There are a range of interesting case studies in the book which take a critical look at different aspects of sustainable design in practice, including health issues, the lure of nostalgia, products and gender. The authors effectively deconstruct the social practices underlying these areas to illustrate the various contested viewpoints at work.

While neatly side-stepping accusations of relativism, in their argument for a "pluralised" and local approach to design, the authors still fail to really meet the scientists or designers half-way. As usual, the social critics wave from the side-lines, while the big boys clear up -when are these guys going to get on the inside track? Where is the participation, rather than observation?

The book is pretty academic, and despite an attractive cover is poorly presented inside, with low-quality black and white pictures. A big mistake if you want to engage visually orientated designers, illustrating that the authors are still trapped by their own discourse which privileges words over symbols and images.
