Product Description

Product Description

The threat from infectious diseases has increased with globalization. Throughout the history of mankind, epidemics have eradicated whole regions, started the migration of peoples and decided wars. They continue to leave their mark on societies, as well as influencing politics and economies. The New Plagues: Pandemics and Poverty in a Globalized World explores the strategies of microbes in conjunction with the economic impact of epidemics. In particular, it looks at the conflict between rich and poor with regard to outbreaks, and introduces possible strategies for containment.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in communicable diseases, immunology and how the present day world has effected the transmission and world wide spread of human pathogens. This book was written by one of the top immunologist in the world in a language that everyone can easily understand no matter what their background. From bacterial disease to viruses to autoimmune disorders, this book covers all aspects of infections and how the current and future globalization of our planet affects our immune system and overall health. With the spread of seasonal flu each year and the emerging threats of avian and swine flu along with the current threats of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and dengue fever, this book is a must read for anyone interested in strategies on how to contain and change the future impact of pathogens in our world.

This book gives a great introduction into how diseases spread globally by one of the experts in the field. It covers a lot of ground taking in all the big diseases (like malaria, tuberculosis, influenza, AIDS etc.) and shows how human behavior is as important as the bugs themselves in the effect they have on our lives. I particularly liked how it manages to be highly readable without skimping on detail. It also lays out the current attitudes of governments, companies and banks to the global health crisis. This book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in these matters.
