Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Elvis recordings - you decide 28 May 2003
By sp
Format:Audio CD
This is excellent. Just listening to this lets us know that Elvis was desperate to move on from those dodgy soundtrack albums. Chips Moman did an excellent job with Elvis - rock, soulful, blusey - it's all here. Elvis sounds enthused and not bored - Suspicious Minds, In the Ghetto, Kentucky Rain - how many other artists could come up with these over 2 sessions. However, there is one that you wished he hadn't bothered with - Hey Jude - just buy and listen to Elvis off key - a rare occurance indeed! This 2 CD set is well worth the money contains everything that's in Back in Memphis and Elvis in Memphis. If you're a fan you'll already have this, if not buy it and you will become one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a revelation 16 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album was a whole new Elvis experience for me! As a life long fan I had been exposed largely to his rock and roll music with some Gospel thrown in for good luck.
I bought this album on the strength of the reviews of clearly more hard fast Elvis fans than I and have now intoduced it to my students who are 16 and 17 - they love it! the power of the ballads, the sheer strength of the feeling in each song, coupled with the musicality and the warmth and truth of Elvis' voice make a compelling mixture.
It is a real delight - I have driven the lenght of theM6 listening to it. The more I listen the more I am convinced of the genious of the voice. If you are a fan you must buy this album!

4.0 out of 5 stars The return of the king 3 July 2004
By Al-13
Format:Audio CD
Return of the king is not too bold a claim for this suberb collection. After numerous movie soundtrack albums and below par singles Elvis spent a couple of weeks in early 1969 in his home town of Memphis putting these songs together.
There are no live recordings from Las Vegas here-these are all studio masters.
He worked with a different producer and new musicians and the result came as a breath of fresh air. Elvis put a lot of thought and work into the songs, some of which were written specially for these sessions and others were favourites of his that he heard over the years.
This well-priced double CD pulls all the songs together from these sessions that had previously been spread over singles and albums during 1969/70. It also contains bonus alternate takes of the likes of Suspicious Minds and In The Ghetto. Every song recorded at these legendary Memphis '69 sessions is here, together with informative sleeve notes.
As befits music of this standard the original production and digital re-mastering have combined to leave a clarity and crispness that makes it hard to believe that the recordings are now 40 years old and it is music like this that CD players were designed for.
Elvis' voice is so intimate and close on some bonus tracks that one imagines he is sitting in your front room rehearsing with the guys in the band.
Be well-advised to buy this because I wish I had bought it long before I did.

My own thoughts on this CD are just the same as most Elvis fans i recon!!Elvis never sounded more soulful and puts 110% into every song.Songs like Only the strong survive,After loving you,Kentucky rain....and of coarse out of this session came suspicious minds and In the ghetto. This has to be in all music lovers CD collections not just Elvis fans.CD 2 on this set is made up of rarer out-takes from the session and demonstrates Elvis'great talent stripped to the bare bones,no overdubs and a startling simplicity to the music that makes it very listenable...This is an Elvis classic, go buy today.
