Book Description

Oct 2000

A novel of gripping psychological suspense, where the fear presents a dramatic contrast to the excellently drawn family life.

Novelist Emma Roth moves from the city with her scientist husband and football mad son into an isolated Victorian house near a suburban town. An author of ghost stories, Emma has no belief in the supernatural until inexplicable things begin to happen. Through her computer strange messages are given, her manuscript is rewritten, her son seems to be threatened, and a past tragedy seems to hover over the present.

Emma Roth is both haunted and hunted, and the unravelling of the drama is both spellbinding and satisfying.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

An addictively compelling novel of psychological suspense where the atmosphere of fear provides a superb contrast to the excellently drawn domestic life. Emma Roth, a writer of ghost stories, is a confirmed citydweller until her scientist husband finds the perfect house, a Victorian building complete with tower, perched on a cliff above the sea.

Country life begins to grow on them and their young son, until inexplicable things begin to happen. Strange messages appear on her computer screen: someone else seems to be writing her manuscript: her son appears to be threatened. But none of these incidents happen when her husband is around, and given her past history, his disbelief isn’t surprising.

As the incursions into her life grow more dangerous, the past tragedy seems to hover more darkly over the present and every relationship she has is in ruins.

Emma Roth is both haunted and hunted. The unravelling is both spellbinding and highly satisfying.

This book is a who-dunnit in the cleverest of modes - each time you think you have worked out who the villain of the piece is, something happens almost at once to make you change your mind. By the time your reach the denouement, almost everyone has come under suspicion. The plot moves smoothly and believably along, and weaves a ghost story inextricably in with the otherwise complete normality of everyday life. Once started, this is a book you will not be able to put down until the last page is finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite Books 14 Dec 2010

SUSPICION is one of my all time favourite books! This is a sophisticated ghost story with a haunting that is woven so seamlessly and skillfully into normal life that it seems all too plausible and frightening.

Emma, is a writer of ghost stories who doesn't believe in ghosts. Her dilemma: if her house is not haunted then she is either losing her mind or someone is trying to destroy her.

You'll be guessing to the end!

This is a wonderful novel! Read it! Barbara Rogan's other books are fabulous too!

These are my other favourites:

Hindsight: A Novel of the Class of 1972
Rowing in Eden
A Heartbeat Away

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspicion 15 April 2005
By Emma
Format:Paperback
Outstanding novel! Once you start reading this novel you cannot let go of this gripping tale of suspense and supernatural. It is a psychological thriller set within a well grounded, homely and comfortable environment which makes the supernatural element all the more credible and spine tingling. It is a story that lingers in the subconscious for a long time simply because it is so hauntingly believable and could happen to you...

5.0 out of 5 stars well paced and beautifully written 29 Sep 2000
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Suspicion is both well paced and beautifully written, the sort of book you will find yourself returning to again and again, long after you know the plot by heart. Once opened I found it compulsive reading, and was filled with that all too rare itch to get back to the story when I had to stop reading. The characters are well conceived and believable- no sap our heroine- and the climax of the book leaves you with a satisfying sense that this is what would happen were it real life. Both a ghost story and a psychological thriller, this book indeed fills the reader with suspicion and tension. I cannot believe that no one else has reviewed this book, and I cannot praise it highly enough. If I could write, I'd do it like this.
