Survival at what cost?,

From the first episodes, which dealt with simple survival, the series has moved to an examination of the group as it aims to achieve something more akin to civilisation. But, as the characters keep finding out, the old rules don't always apply, or cannot always be implemented, under the new conditions. In the first episode, "Law and Order", the people struggle to achieve cohesion as a community. Morale is low, they irritate each other, so Abby suggests a party to celebrate May Day. A lighthearted remark that this was a pagan rite, involving the spilling of blood, proves dramatically prophetic, with murder in their midst and a sacrificial victim. The group must then decide between humane principles and self-protection - a difficult choice, between compassion and practicality, when the safety of the children must also be taken into account.Compassion sways the women in particular, in the next episode, "The Future Hour", when they protect a pregnant woman from her companion. The community is attacked, and two lives are lost in a bloody shoot-out before the resolution.
