They don't make TV like this anymore !, 1 Feb 2001

This review is from: Survivors 1 - The Fourth Horseman/Genesis [VHS] [1975] (VHS Tape)
Classic stuff !, They don't make TV like this anymore. In these two opening episodes of this mid seventies series , the remaining characters lives are changed forever. It was joy this re-discover this series after so many years, having only been allowed stay up late to see a few episodes ( in my youth). The scripts are so well written (some by Terry Nation of Dr Who fame), with ordinary / real characters struggling against situations that would arise from any similar disaster. I like the way characters stories run in parallel , crossing over occasionally ; or not in the case the 1st episode ( the two females miss each other by seconds). It make you think ' How would I cope, waking up to find everyone you know dead? '. Buy this , regarding of age if the like quality drama ( it's not spoiled by dated (70's) special effects)... P.S. I was going to call it 'Sci-fi' , but it's too realistic for that!

Post-Epidemic Seventies, 11 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Survivors 1 - The Fourth Horseman/Genesis [VHS] [1975] (VHS Tape)
Once upon a time before visual entertainment was classified into sitcom, action, soap, horror and scifi there was drama. Survivors takes a simple premise and then explores it with a studied seriousness. For todays viewers the lack of incidental music may come as something of a shock. If at times the studio sequences resemble 'radio with pictures' much of the generous location work is the reverse, lengthy cinematography with only wild track accompaniment. All this lends Survivors a unique edge. In some ways it resembles a soap more than SF. Characters pass each other, meet, explore post-epidemic emotions then split off again. It's not science fiction because there's no pretense at scientific analysis of the epidemic. The survivors don't raid labs and try to cure the plague. Instead they embrace optimism and despair in a way that never fails to be compelling.

Fantastic, 25 April 2003
This review is from: Survivors 1 - The Fourth Horseman/Genesis [VHS] [1975] (VHS Tape)
From the first shot of a masked scientist dropping a flask, to the businessmen arriving in airports around the world, shots of passports and dripping blood, all put together in a collage of movement to the spine chilling, apocolyptic theme tune, you just know you're on to a winner. Survivors, quite simply, is the best SciFi series to have hit the small screen. Regardless of where series have been made, this BBC masterpiece is so well done. It's so believable. This first tape has the first two episodes, where we witness a normal world turned upside down by a plague like flu - perhaps a virulent form of pneumomic plague. Things appear to remain calm, and normal to begin with, but then the long term effects of the plague in a world whose population has been revaged starts to become clear. Brilliantly acted, superbly scripted, this series will leave you feeling vulnerable. With the worlds media currently focussed on SARS this is a timely reminder of just how the world could end. Scarey stuff. Enjoy!
