5.0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue!, 14 Oct 2003
It's a real pleasure to finally see this out on DVD at last. Survivors is a thought-provoking and involving series that explores the aftermath of a man-made biological catastrophe that's even more plausible these days than it was back in the Seventies. Sound and broadcast quality of all the episodes is good and the accompanying booklet is especially informative and well-produced, with very useful background information and essays.

A special mention for the extras - two episodes (The Fourth Horseman, Law and Order) have excellent commentaries and the interviews with various stars of the show are also very good. There's also a useful photo gallery.

Highly recommended. Roll on Series 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as I remember, 12 Oct 2003
I loved this program as a child in the 70's. There was something so exciting about the idea of being a survivor in a brand new world. I got the DVDs delivered yesterday and I have watched the first 4 episodes today. It is just as good as I remember. I love how the program takes its time to tell the story. Perhaps it reflects how TV was then, compared to now with the flash effects and poor story lines. I think the reality is that the quality of the writing and the commitment of the actors really shines out. The DVD pack is top quality and it has obviously been put together with a great deal of care. Treat yourself to some great nostalgia but also to a superb piece of television drama.

Cheers

Tom Mcguire

5.0 out of 5 stars A very British drama, 27 Sep 2005
By Balraj Gill (Slough, Berkshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

I had never seen Survivors before, but I had heard of the basic premise of 99% of the population being wiped out by a virus. This sort of post-apocalyptic story has a robust tradition in British minds - witness 28 Days Later and The Last Train. But I think Survivors is the best example of this "end of the world" scenario.

Nowadays, it seems all the dramas on TV are either concerned with the police, hospitals or other public sector workers like the army or fire brigade. Survivors cuts through all this and simply deals with human nature and its many faults and shortcomings.

There are 13 episodes in the 1st series. The 1st episode "The Fourth Horseman" depicts the spread of the virus and is fantastic in its pace and scope. The other episodes are all gripping, but special mention must go to the 9th episode "Law and Order", which made me feel physically sick at the end. This was not because of any violence but due to the concealment of a miscarriage of justice that shook you to the core.

I also have to mention that it makes a refreshing change to watch drama that does without overbearing incidental music. There is no background music whatsoever in Survivors and it adds to its "naturalness", if that is the correct adjective.

Overall, Survivors is great, thought-provoking television. Just be aware that some of the thoughts provoked can be quite depressing and rob you of a good night's sleep.
