Written in the same style as his first book, Patriots, about the same event but different people. Personally I think he goes on a bit talking about guns in quite some detail, and the personalities of the characters are unlikely (either saints or devils) but it doesn't spoil the book at all. I would recommend it to anyone interested in what might happen if the current economic situation is allowed to continue. The book is truly capturing and I hope more people will be moved by it to take responsibility for their own wellbeing, and that of their loved ones in stead of relying on others and the government to look after them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalyptic adventure story 20 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is a kind of companion novel to the author's 'Patriots: a novel of the coming collapse'. Either can be read alone, but there is some overlap in terms of characters and events. As in 'Patriots', the story is fictional and set in a world where financial collapse has brought about the end of civilisation as we know it. There are no plagues, nuclear bombs or zombies, just the end of the modern way of life when the structure of society falls apart.

The story features several groups of people, mostly in the US. The exception is one of the main characters who is serving in the US army in Iraq at the time of collapse, and quite a lot of the book deals with his journey home by various means. These groups are mainly 'prepper' types to some extent who seem to have planned for such an emergency on some level.

This fictional story is used as a vehicle to instruct the reader on useful survival tips and to speculate about what sorts of issues would arise in that situation. This is all pretty interesting and why I bought the book mostly. However, the story is also used as a mechanism to preach and put forward the author's opinions on religion and the need to prepare for disasters. At some times this gets a bit much, but it isn't overpowering so I would recommend this book for anyone interested in survival/social collapse/apocalyptic fiction. It isn't pure entertainment like a story, but it doesn't read like a dry textbook either, so if this hybrid form sounds interesting then give it a go.

By the way, this book contains a lot of military jargon. If you're not that familiar with the terminology note that there's a glossary at THE BACK of the book. I found it once I had read the whole thing. Putting it at the front might have avoided some confusion!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a patch on Patriots 18 Oct 2011
By Steve
Format:Hardcover
Though I am a strong fan of Jim Rawles and his book Patriots has pride of place in my PA Book collection I admit to being bitterly disappointed with this new book.

The author spends far to much time shovel gospel teachings down readers throats, you can hardly turn a page in this book that is supposed to be about a societal collapse without the author going off on a bible thumping session.

Then part way through the book the story moves away from from being an adventure novel to being a love story for the best part of a chapter, that killed it for me as did he utterly innacurate portrayal of gun laws and self defence in the UK.

This book is the first book in many years I could not finish , It got thrown away rather than added to my PA Collection of books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible 15 May 2013
By Sluggo
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Just awful on so many levels. The author's writing style is akin to that of a pubescent chimp banging away at a typewriter (while smoking a cigar).

I devour books of all genres, but this is one of the very few in 20 years that I have closed, turned to my wife and said "I can't continue, let's just hope the binding glue is recyclable".

How it got into print is beyond me.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you loved "Patriots" this is one for you.... 18 Oct 2011
By Y1b
Format:Hardcover
Another great "schumer-doomer" novel from JW,R. If you have read Patriots this latest book will make far more sense, as it fills in a lot of the prequel information about how the characters came about: It does stand on its own, but may be confusing, so buy the pair and read them one after another.

It is once again quite US centric, from a writing style, but does have content related to many non-US locations including southern England - with geographical accuracy which can often be lacking in other Authors' content.

If you enjoyed Patriots then you can not fail to appreciate this latest work.
