Product Description

Product Description

Software testers require people-oriented skills to survive what can often be a lose-lose relationship with developers and managers. Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing goes beyond the technical skillsets required for effective testing to address the political realities that can't be solved by technical knowledge alone.

Authors Perry and Rice compile a "top ten" list of the challenges faced by testers and offer tactics for success. The challenges illustrate the way testing fits into the context of software development and how testers can manage expectations and improve communication with managers, developers, and customers. The text features a self-assessment for testing skills and an action plan for improving the testing process.

Topics include training, acquiring management support, obtaining tools, communicating with customers, managing changing requirements, marketing the importance of testing, testing what's thrown over the wall, controlling the scope of testing, teaching developers to test, and handling the delicate situation of reporting defects.

The Top Ten People Challenges Facing Testers

Challenge #10: Getting Trained in Testing
Challenge #9: Building Relationships with Developers
Challenge #8: Testing Without Tools
Challenge #7: Explaining Testing to Managers

Challenge #5: Making Time for Testing
Challenge #4: Testing What's Thrown Over the Wall
Challenge #3: Hitting a Moving Target
Challenge #2: Fighting a Lose-Lose Situation
Challenge #1: Having to Say No

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives you a head-start in the software testing process, 5 Oct 1998

This review is from: Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing: A People Oriented Approach (Paperback)
This is truly a book you want to read -- if you want to know what makes a software tester tick. Doesn't delve into all the methods and techniques you ought to use, but approaches the art of software testing from a different perspective: how do I get the software testing process on the road and how do I keep it there. I found it informative, even humorous at times to read. Only one comment though: the autors should have addressed the technical part as a challenge: how to get a testing environment up and running in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for ALL new to TEST MANAGEMENT, 28 Aug 2008

As a Test Manager in high profile financial project I found this book was incredibly useful for me in dealing with the MAN/PEOPLE MANAGEMENT of a Test Team and how to represent its needs and priorities to PROJECT/PROGRAMME Management.

It deals will all areas to be considered to get Senior Management on 'your' side for test teams visibility.

All too often testing is an after thought left to the end of a development project, this book explains how important it is to keep testing in at the 'ground floor' and continually in th elight during the development life cycle.

IT also highlights how to put testing into a positive light and champion its work - not the usual testing is something that is stopping completion by finding irritating bugs (thats a testers job after all!)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR TEST MANAGERS EVERYWHERE

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed. Referrals to the American standards, 21 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing: A People Oriented Approach (Paperback)
I have purchased numerous books on software testing and this book is currently gathering dust on my shelf. The americans may be streets ahead of us in testing standards however this book refers to the American standards in too much detail for it to be enjoyed.
