5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant! A therapists' (and survivors') guide to recovery, 25 Oct 2006
This book, now well over a decade old, is really one of the best I've read on working with survivors of child sexual abuse. I'm a psychotherapist working on a daily basis with people struggling with the recovery from the traumatic fallout of abuse and this book offers work in this area from a more compassionate, and hopeful, position, than any other, I think.
In many ways, Mary Bratton's central thesis, that CSA survivors are suffering from PTSD, and that this needs to be at the core of their therapy, is obvious, but I'm not sure I've seen this as well stated, and as clearly made a central part of the therapy. She dips into inner child work, into a variety of more cognitive approaches, offers a wide variety of practical support structures, but all from a fresh, and integrated position.
Much of what she says has been said before, (and since), but in more specialised areas. Mary Bratton's approach is to distill useful stuff from a variety of sources, and present it in a useful, and useable, form
For counsellors and therapists afraid of, or unsure about, working with the burder of resolving CSA issues, I'd recommend this book wholeheartedly. I recommend it to my supervisees, and I recommend it to you.
