I love this book. It clearly demystifies the PhD process by providing hands-on advice for all important aspects of the life as a doctoral student such as motivational issues, dealing with your supervisor and lots more. Doing a PhD is never easy and you can use every help that you can get. This book is definitely a great source of help. The real-life cases and stories are the icing on the cake. A well-written, quick and easy read this book is the right guide for PhD students be it locals from the UK or from overseas. It is an excellent guide that helps you to focus on the important issues as you move along the PhD path. My advice: Keep this book on your nightstand at all times and consult it as you progress in your PhD process.

Doing a PhD is not easy. And because this is the case, every PhD student needs some kind of advice or guidance. Although there are many books on the market I had the feeling that real guidance is rare. With "How to survive your doctorate" I found the insider's guide I was looking for. It answers practically all questions about what and what not to do during your PhD in order to become a successful survivor. With the collection of real life cases the authors are offering hands-on examples for all future PhD student. I suggest that everyone who wants to be a successful survivor of a PhD should read this book.

Academia vs Real World 20 April 2011
By Szymon
Format:Paperback
I know that people doing phd have enough to read, but it wouldn't hurt if added something off the curriculum, slowed down and actually planned their lives for all those years spent doing the phd. I did it and it allowed me to finish this phd nightmare a little ahead of the schedule.

I guess other people could find this book useful in the same way. The chapter on real life vs academia might help those of you who feel shocked (as I do) by what a gap there is between the two worlds and how little they have in common.
