This product works...... exactly as it says.
I'm very confused by the reviews stating otherwise.
It did take two weeks to turn up but then in the description it states this.
If you're looking for a firesteel to use on a regular basis then spend more money and purchase something with a larger firesteel element, this one is only 3mm in diameter and is glued to the larger metal rod in the picture. It does run all the way to the handle. You can see this if you enlarge the picture. It's shown at the very bottom of the main rod.
This is perfect for that occasion you hope will never happen or for the odd camping trip.
At this price and with free delivery, you can't go wrong.

Well, it is cheap, and would serve you in an emergency. But... the rod is very slim and is glued into a plastic housing, thus giving the impression from the picture that the rod is substantial.
I bought this for my B.O.B so it will stay there, but I do have a 'Light my Fire' fero rod and this is the nuts! The Light my Fire rod has been used every week night fishing for over a year now and well worth the £10/£15.
So, the China fero rod is ok, but for all you buying for the first time, spend the extra, and get a Light My Fire rod, they are so much better and you will not regret it. Afterall, when you're wet, cold, and need a fire, its just not worth the risk!

This is a "combi" firesteel with the magnesium (fat bar) that can be scraped by the toothed end to provide "kindling" and the flint part a narrower bar mounted into that to scrape along with the steel. A couple of scrapes needed to start to get rid of the finish coating first but a nice long bar (7cm -ish) to get lots of sparks. I think for 97p you can't go wrong for occasional use - but it does come from China so be prepared to wait on delivery.

I own a few firesteels , ranging from the premium brand Light My Fire 2.0 Fire Steel Scout Made in Sweden - Redto the ludicrously cheap Liroyal Fire Steel Flint & Striker SAS Survival Tool Kit - Outdoor Camping Living Survival Tool, and when I saw the description for this one at a bargain price I couldn't resist adding it to the collection.
I believe some of the reviewers have misunderstood what this particular rod is all about , and what makes it different to the cheap type of rod linked to above .
This is that the thin ferrocerium (artificial flint) spark creating rod is fixed to the side of a thicker metal rod . This thicker rod is made of magnesium , a metal which in small fragments burns with exceptional heat and brightness (as beloved of chemistry teachers wanting an impressive effect to wake the class up , firework manufacturers wanting sparklers to sparkle, or Edwardian photographers firing it to create a flash of intense light). Both metal rods are coated , and that coating must be scraped away to expose the metal beneath . A search on how to use a firesteel and magnesium will give plenty of videos showing you how to use this combination : short version
1) Scrape the big rod to get a pile of magnesium shavings about the size of a pound coin on some tinder. Careful, those shavings will blow away if its windy !
2) Use the scraper (or better , the back of a knife) to strike sparks from the slender ferro rod directed to the pile of shavings.

Well to start with the fire steel I recieved were nothing like the pictures and discription. The handle or hold point is as the picture but the magnesium stick/strip is less than half the size shown and to be honest was a total waste of time and effort. Oh and then they discribe the brilliant 'spark' you get from them. Picture this, go to the darkest place in your house, turn off all the lights and strike the fire steel. The first sign of a 'brilliant' glow will be from the striker glowing red from you running it over the steel at 500 miles an hour trying to get a hint of a spark. when you turn the lights back on you will be surprised to find you are now covered in Twinkle Bells fairy dust .............
What I'm trying to say is don't bother. Spend the extra cash and know it will work when you need it. Now all I got to figure out is what to do with the 5 I ordered.....

Had a survival party for 10 x ten year olds. - We were caught out by the long shipping time direct from china but gave them as belated party bag gifts. While the amount of magnesium is limited (but will probably last longer than a ten year olds attention span) the striker is significantly better than the one provided on a premium kit I bought for £14.00 thus producing great large sparks. Only word of note is it did take 5 or 6 strikes to remove the protective layer before we go these fantastic sparks.

Brought this product for an expedition to the peak district, used it with dry glass, worked fine. I can see why the review below thought is wasn't magnesium, the bottom is only partly magnesium to keep it the tube stronger.
