This is unquestionably the best book about Auschwitz ever written and may be the best Holocaust memoir ever written. Primo Levi was an Italian chemist and the book is modelled on Dante's Inferno: the first half depicts Auschwitz (the descent into hell) and the second half describes his adventures after liberation as he sought to get home (the ascent from hell). Levi's most extraordinary achievement is to write a book about his experiences in Auschwitz which is morally uplifting and asserts our common humanity. Read this book and you will know what it took to survive Auschwitz.

I wish Levi was given some guidance on how to write a book instead,of presenting a muddled book thats hard to follow.
