I've had this book for 2 weeks and it is without doubt the best book on yacht and small craft surveying and related subjects that I have ever read. This book is an invaluable asset to boat owners, prospective owners, surveys, engineers and the enthusiast. It is clearly written in good standard English, well illustrated with excellent examples of good and bad practice.

An absolute must for any boats book shelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surveying GRP boats 5 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Good book on what a top survey should look like and how to produce one. There's nothing else like this on the market. Also useful if you're buying a GRP boat and want to make your own checks. Closest thing to a Haynes manual for second hand yachts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin! 4 May 2010
Format:Paperback
A wealth of detailed information that concentrates on the actual job. This book covers many aspects of surveying and will prove ideal for any boat owner wanting to prepare, sell or even check their own potential purchase. Attractive presentation gives clear guidance, many examples and reasoning throughout the book. Lots of detailed pictures too all in a colourful and attractive sized format.

The author is obviously a practicing surveyor and it shows. He avoids giving you scientific explanations, chemical compositions, design considerations and the like, but gives real practical advice on what to look for, how to check it and what the results indicate. Best of its kind I have found.

Nothing comes close to this one. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surveying Yachts and Small Craft 4 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Stevens has taken a practical approach in writing this book. It is heavily illustrated with clear photos of actual faults commonly found in yachts and small craft.
He carefully explains what is found and uses actual survey extracts from vessels he has surveyed.
This book is a must read for any student surveyor and a reminder to practicising surveyors on what they should be looking for and how they should explain their findings.

Boat owners, brokers and insurance claim staff will also find this interesting and instructive reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best surveying handbook on the market 11 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Paul has a great writing style that is straight to the point and easy to understand. The book is full of concise practical information and is illustrated throughout with large interesting colour photographs of actual defects accompanying the text. The book covers a complete survey and highlights various serious common defects. It should equally appeal to prospective buyers of boats and also to surveyors. It is a very good survey guide indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but incomplete 29 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very helpful but would have liked a bit more about construction of hulls with inner bonded frames and linings.
Metal frames as used by X Yachts and a few others are not mentioned at all.
