Review

I recommend Sangharakshita's book as the best survey of Buddhism. --Dr Edward Conze, author of 'Buddhism: Its Essence and Development' and translator of 'Buddhist Wisdom Books and The Perfection of Wisdom in 8,000 Lines'

Simply the most complete single volume survey of all the major doctrines and traditions in the development of Buddhism. --Buddhist Peace Fellowship

A considerable achievement of Buddhist scholarship... this book can be heartily recommended to readers of all schools of thought. --The Middle Way

Sangharakshita's "A Survey of Buddhism" is a masterful overview of Buddhist theory and practice by someone who has lived the teachings throughout a long and varied life. It's unity and breadth of vision are deeply inspiring. This book is a must for all practitioners of the Dharma who want to understand its essence.

A masterly survey of Buddhism and its traditions by a man who has imbibed the spirit and studied the letter of Buddhism in the East and translated it into a form assimilable by Westerners not yet acquainted with the cultural and spiritual riches of the East. The style of writing is somewhat archaic, but far from being a disadvantage, it serves to awaken in the mind of the reader resonances with the great literary traditions of the whole of humanity. Highly recommended.

This is not an easy book to read but it's message is really life-changing. It's one of those books that can be read over and over again, each read reveals new discoveries, new truths, new depths to explore. I love it!

Clear, overall discussion of Buddhism 9 May 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book will give you a truly deep understanding of general Buddhism, but more importantly, the essence of Buddhism, the spiritual ideals behind it and the relationship of all schools. I think it is the best book on the subject I have read, and over the last decade that amounts to several cases of books.

Scholarly 19 Feb. 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A very comprehensive text on Buddhism. The reading is difficult and very scholarly. It seems well written and researched, but I would not recommend it to the lay reader simply interested in a history of Buddhism. This text analyzes and gets very deep, very quickly. A text for religious study majors.

A Great Reference and in depth study 5 Nov. 2007
By M. Wolfe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is both informative and inspiring. A great read for buddhists who need the intellectual hook but also hope to understand the mythic context. It is a great reference for understanding other Buddhist teachings.
