Book Description

17 Sep 2009 Brennan and Esposito (Book 1)

A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spreadeagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing.

But this is the third time Phil and his team have seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No-one can imagine what sort of person would want to commit such evil acts.

When psychologist Marina Esposito is brought in, Phil has to put aside his feelings about their shared past and get on with the job. But can they find the killer before another woman is targeted?

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked it 25 Feb 2012
By Lainy
Format:Paperback
A killer is targeting pregnant woman and wants one thing from them, the baby. The story starts with a double murder, brutal in it's ferocity and nature. The police enlist the help of Marina Esposito, a profiling psychologist whose last interaction with the team still haunts her and this case will take all of her focus and dedication.

It is a very busy story, lots of different ties and links going on. I felt like this was book number two as it kept referring back to Marina's last case she worked on with them and how it had a huge impact on her and DI Phil Brennan's relationship. It eventually explains it out what happened but until it does you feel your missing quite a vital part of what happened between them.

The subject matter of someone removing unborns from their mothers stomach and what follows after is quite horrific, the details aren't the most gruesome I have read but due to what it is it does make for unsettling reading. It is a good crime story with lots going on and a decent introduction to this author's writing however for me there was something lacking which is why I am giving it a three. I did enjoy the story and a lot of my questions where answered but there was some things left out or not explained so 3/5 for me and I will read more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, recommended 23 Sep 2009
By JM TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is an enjoyable crime novel about a vicious serial killer who murders heavily pregnant women after first cutting out and stealing their babies. Fortunately for someone like me with a fairly weak stomach, while the subject matter is gruesome, the gore is kept to a minimum so it can be read easily enough by a squeamish reader. The main characters are likeable and engaging, and we get to know the victims a little bit before they are murdered. It's well paced on the whole, although maybe a little too much about the relationship between the two main characters slows it down in parts. I did find the motive for the killings slightly peculiar, I didn't think it was entirely plausible, and the connections between the villains quite bizarre given their history, however all in all, a good read, and I would look out for more by this author in the future.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shocking ..... the writing, not the story! 23 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As other reviewers have said a potentially interesting storyline but ruined by the pages upon pages of dreadful prose, lack of character development and dubious plot and outcomes. The police procedurals were especially bad, as if the author had absolutely no idea of what might or might not happen as part of an investigation. It was all 'he said, no, she said' stuff. The scences about Hester struggling to come to terms with the newborns were actually pretty well done though. As an avid reader of all manner of crime fiction (I am not easily shocked) I was very disappointed with this book, it falls way short of the real pros - Mo Hayder, Peter James, Tess Gerritson to name a few.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea which got a little bogged down 4 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The comparison to Karin Slaughter, Tess Gerritsen and Kathy Reichs raised my expectations which was unfortunate as this writing combo (the writer is not named Tania Carver) as "she" is the pseudonym of a husband and wife writing team, namely Martyn and Linda Waites and not (yet) in the same league as these three authors.
So managing expectations wasn't great from the outset.
However the idea was genuinley intereseting, if not gruesome.
Being centred aroud Colchester was a bit risky as it hardly has the allure of Los Angeles or Paris so that was a brave call.
The central characters were a tad predictable but nonetheless well developed.
The story revolves aroud a serial killer who targets pregnant women and brutally removing their unborn babies with crude surgical techniques.
DI Phil Brennan is the main character and is the main man called into investigate.
Then enter stage left, criminal profiler Marina Esposito who is brought in to help solve the case and no suprise the love interest with Phil Brennan is rekindled.
Whilst all roads leads to a big brute of a man comitting these murders she believes there is a woman involved in these killings ... but is this classic misdirection?
There is some genuinely good writing here but you sense that a better Editor would iron out a few kinks.
However towards the end it was compulsive reading which is an essential ingredient with any Novelist.
