Product Description

Surrogacy Was the Way: Twenty Intended Mothers Tell Their Stories documents the true stories of twenty women who had children via surrogacy. Surrogacy is a complete possibility in today's day and age, but anyone considering this route to parenthood should know the pros and cons. The women featured go to surrogacy for a variety of reasons, ranging from Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) to cancer to unexplained infertility and everything in between. Some of the journeys go rather smoothly-while others are filled with one obstacle after another. Some of the women have children already and want to add to their family, while most are attempting to become moms for the first time. What they all have in common, however, is that every woman whose story is told knows what it's like to be an intended mother-the term for the "mother to be" if and when a baby is born. And all of the women ultimately end up having a child (or more) through surrogacy. When I first started researching surrogacy, I was fortunate to find several Online support groups. As I gave and received support to so many other women I became fascinated with the extent to which people would go to simply have a baby. I realized that their stories-our stories-needed to be heard; thus, the idea for this book was born. For the millions of women who have been touched by infertility in some way, or know someone who has, Surrogacy Was the Way will open their eyes to amazing possibilities. It will show them that they do have options, and with persistence and faith, they can achieve their dreams of motherhood after all.

I found this book really helpful and informative. My husband and I are a UK couple doing surrogacy in the US and this book really provided me with a lot of useful information. Most of the case studies are from America - which is inevitable as surrogacy is most common there. However, all the stories were very different and illustrated different approaches to surrogacy. Also I liked the fact that this is a warts and all account - the writers speak honestly about the difficulties of the surrogacy process and the many potential pit falls. However, the book is also hopeful and shows that surrogacy can work incredibly well and bring hope to couples who may have no other chance of having a child. I think that anyone considering surrogacy could find this book useful. It doesn't give information on how you go about organising surrogacy but, through reading the stories here, you can find out much useful information. It is always more illuminating to read real stories than dry facts.

Helpful for both surrogates and intended parents 2 Mar 2006
By Jennifer A. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book takes a look at the intended parents perspective and is very helpful for both surrogates and intended parents going through surrogacy. It looks at the details that people don't want to talk about. Surrogacy is a beautiful way to achieve pregnancy, but there isn't a resource for intended parents on what to expect! This book shows that both intended parents and surrogates are human, flaws and all. It is a great way for perspective people going through surrogacy to get a dialogue started on what to anticipate when going through surrogacy.

I would recommend this wholeheartdly. It's truth from the perspective of the intended parents. We've all heard the perspectives of the surrogates, what they go through, the sacrifices they make to help achieve a pregnancy for a wanting couple. But, the people who have suffered loss after loss before they even begin to pursue surrogacy are finally represented in 20 short interesting stories.

Not that uplifting.... especially for a surrogate! 15 Dec 2009
By Mrs. Hurly - Published on Amazon.com

Out of the 20 stories there were only 3 positive relationships with surrogates and only ONE that I would call Great! As a previous surrogate it was extremely frustrating to read how a lot of these IP's treated their surrogates. Granted, many of them were scammed, but we are not all like that - another reason *I* chose to work with an agency. I needed to protect myself.

I couldn't imagine putting myself, my family and my life on hold for 9+ months (if the IVF worked right away) and being told I couldn't drive to go take a class but at the same time my IPs were too stressed to deal with things going on so they took a trip to Jamaica. Seriously?!? Your work schedule didn't allow you to be at the transfer? I'm sorry, your future child is getting his/her/their start and you are already too busy? As a surrogate *I* have to be there and rearrange my schedule, you should do the same!

Maybe it was just a wake up call to me to make sure that I put in the contract that this isn't just a business relationship, I am looking for someone who will appreciate what I am doing. Trust me.

I was truly blessed with my previous 2 surrogacy journeys - this book just made me mad! As a surrogate if you want something positive, this is *NOT* it!

....and just so I don't sound like a total jerk, I am sorry that as an IP you have had to come to surrogacy to create your family and things didn't happen 'as they were suppose to'. I do truly feel for you, that is why I became a surrogate!

A Must Read!!! 26 Oct 2006
By Stephanie Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"Surrogacy was the Way" is a must read for anyone considering surrogacy as a family-building option. I read the book soon after I found out that my gestational surrogate was pregnant and it helped to relieve some of the anxiety I was feeling. I liked that all of the stories had the "happy ending" and that each woman seemed to genuinely share her worries and concerns about going through the surrogacy process. Reading the stories alleviated some of my own nervousness about surrogacy and it helped me to feel that I was not alone. I found it to be inspiring, calming, and real and I am so glad that Ms. Griswold wrote it. My mother, who also read the book, was so moved by the stories that she cried. There is no other book like this one out there and I am thankful that it came at the right time for me.
