Review

'Wonderfully amusing ... A comic gem' --Alexander McCall Smith

'Great wit and terrific social observation'
--Fiona Walker

'An engaging homage to EM Delafield's brilliantly comic Diary of a Provincial Lady ... Very funny and curiously soothing' --Jane Shilling, Daily Mail

'The new Helen Fielding'
--Company

Warning: unintended snorts of laughter may occur in public places. Comic satire erupts when modern mores and reality TV invade the comfortable confines of Constance Harding's cozy upper crust world. I loved every dizzy, delightful page.
--Helen Simonson, bestselling author of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

Product Description

Constance Harding's comfortable corner of the Home Counties is her own little piece of heaven. Her time is spent party-planning (disastrous), matchmaking for her startlingly well-dressed son Rupert (catastrophic), and dreaming of the hat aisles at John Lewis. But she's about to learn that her perfect home conceals scandal that would make the vicar blush. Her Lithuanian housekeeper's polyester underwear keeps appearing in her husband's study, her parrot has gained a troubling new vocabulary and her daughter is turning into a Lycra-clad gap-year strumpet. As her family falls apart, Constance embarks on an extraordinary journey. From tripping in Ibiza to riding with a handsome Argentinean gaucho whose only English words are 'Britney' and 'Spears', Constance discovers a wider world she thought it was too late to find ...

I really enjoyed this story of family life, narrated by Constance in her blog. Her naivety is at the heart of the story as her family are growing and moving on. There are several plot twists that are obvious but not to Constance and some of her introduction to a new technological world including Facebook are hilarious. Then the crunch comes and it is strange but somehow works.
For me this was the story of what happens to a family as children grow up and move on, what roles there are in the family and how they change. What children can teach their parents, practically and emotionally but ultimately how we need each other however flawed we are.
This was similar for me in theme and tone to Dawn French 'Tiny Bit Marvellous'

I think everyone knows someone like Constance. A wonderfuly funny read, just the type of pick me up book you need to get through the commute, had me laughing out loud on the train! Highly recommended.

This is a very easy and funny book to read and kept me gripped on my holiday while I cringed at Constance's naivety and wondered at her "hectic" social life. The characters are fun and while very stereotypical of the Home Counties set, it is a tongue in cheek narrative so can't be taken seriously. A good, fun holiday read.

If this is what reading the Daily Telegraph does to your brain ...
I think some of the negative reviewers here are completely missing the point (and by the way, it's a gross exaggeration to say that bell-ringing occupies 50 per cent of the book -... Read more

A year in the life of Constance Harding encaptures life in a small English village where flower arranging, bell ringing and what the neighbours think are key issues. Read more

boring & cliched
I've been reading this book for weeks - it is just so uninspiring, I can't be bothered to read it. The characters are all really stereo-typed and the actions are really cliched. Read more

Great read!
So imagine Bridget Jones, 20 years on from where we last left her... that's the vibe of this story. If I was directing the film version I would have the wonderful Juliet Stevenson... Read more

A Surrey state of affairs
I thought the 'heroine' pathetic and totally self-centred, but is she typical of the 'Home Counties' set? This was chosen for a Book Group, so not one I would have picked.

instant comic classic!
Ceri Radford is the freshest and funniest voice to emerge since...I'm tempted to say Helen Fielding, but it's more Stella Gibbons in the sense that the satire nips like a terrier,... Read more

Splendid
I really enjoyed this book. It seemed slightly clunking in the first twenty pages, but the light-hearted tone engaged me. Read more

Hilarious and brilliantly written
A Surrey State of Affairs is a comic novel par excellence. It had me in stitches throughout. I am now bereft without Constance. Please write a sequel Ceri!

What a waste of time!
This is an extremely poor novel. The characterisation is weak and unconvincing, and the plot laughable. Read more
