Product Description

Product Description

Each book in Taschen's Basic Art movement and genre series includes a detailed introduction with approximately 30 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, sporting, etc.) that took place during the time period. The body of the book contains 35 of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work, portrait of the artist, and biographical information. With Salvador Dalf at its mast, the great ship of Surrealism launched off into the wild and turbulent sea of the Roaring Twenties, its salls puffed full of winds blown by Sigmund Freud and Andre Breton. With dreamlike, fantastic imagery, the Surrealists made great, sensational waves in the art world. The influence of artists such as Dali, Ernst, and Magritte, on 20th century film, theatre, literature, and thought is inestimable.

.... and clever types too in fairness!

As a basic intro to the movement this book is ideal. Whilst it does have all the heavyweights, there are a number of lesser known artists included and this is very helpful in expanding your knowledge beyond the obvious choices such as Dali and Magritte etc.

The paper quality is good meaning that the picture reproduction is bright and accurate, but the small page size does somewhat hamper the ability to get a better 'experience' of the works. That said, the handy size means you are more likely to read it as you don't get a hernia picking it up!

Excellent value for money.

Taschen - Value, great print quality and sound writing; that's what I've come to expect from them and they deliver it again here.

This little book at 95 pages can never claim to be a hugely in-depth look at the movement but what it does it does well. There is a nice overview essay at the start outlining the movement before the book moves on to look at individual and important artists and their works. The size is handy - roughly 7 1/2 x 9 inches and Taschen's designers have made great use of the space as always. Most right hand pages are given over to a full page (or as close as is possible) bordered print. Obviously the book isn't huge so neither are the prints but the print quality is excellent leading to an good level of engagement with the work, given the size.

As is usual, the text is informative without being overly dense. Works are discussed with insight and the text is engaging; if anything I do find myself wanting more but I can't fault the book for that as it is true to its purpose.

5 stars is easily justified because the quality of the book is top rate in terms of printing and paper quality and content wise is a great primer with decent writing to go with it. It's from the 'basic art series' and so must be expected to be a little thinner than other books on the subject. The real clincher is the price. This will reside on my bookshelf shelf and be of use for a long time. There aren't many things costing just over 5 quid you can say that about these days!
