More About the Author

Living in a small village in Lancashire, England, the author has written a number of books based on the tale 'Peter'.

In the 1990s, the author had twenty-one articles published, both nationally and internationally. After gaining an honours degree in Geosciences, doing post-graduate study in Occupational Health and Fitness, and earning a masters degree in Science Communication, he developed an interest for simple communication.

A passion for writing again emerged, and combining various interests in fine art, museum exhibition display, biology, geology, poetry, and the mystical led to the story of Peter: A Darkened Fairytale. The author still retains a childlike vision of the world, which is conveyed throughout his books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17 Mar. 2014

"Surreal Peter (Peter: A Darkened Fairytale #4) Short Poems & Tiny Thoughts - Vol 2" by William O'Brien is a short but very memorable selection of poems.
In this series the author has created a wonderful dialogue between these poems and his novel-length stories about Peter: A Darkened Fairytale.
With all the charm that magic can bring these poems have all the best from the world of fairy tales: Dragons, wizards, fairies and a lot of mystery. They remind me of Narnia, Alice in Wonderland and magic realism with their classic and original ideas. Told in sometimes almost cryptic and rhythmic staccato style, the flow is fast and engaging, dragging you faster into the dark and wonderful world of Peter. It is odd and surreal but utterly engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff! 24 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
William O’Brien is one of the more interesting authors I’ve come across of late. And about the only way I thought I could do justice to his Peter: A Darkened Fairytale compendium was to do one review that dealt with his work as a whole. The set includes the full narrative, A Darkened Fairytale, and four shorter poetry works that enhance the material and themes in the primary storyline, as well as foreshadow things to come in future works. It’s an incredibly creative approach that works very well.

The full narrative is the story of a boy named Peter who, on his tenth birthday, is transported into a world of fantasy and mystery inhabited by a wonderful cast of characters. Peter embarks on a journey, dare I say quest, which children and adults will adore. Mr. O’Brien has created a magical adventure on a multi-layered canvas for Peter to creatively and bravely work his way through.
Mr. O’Brien has a wonderful writing style and his imagery and themes remind me of the fantasy worlds found in Alice in Wonderland as well as Roald Dahl’s work; particularly James and the Giant Peach. But I cite these only as reference points, and certainly not to convey the impression that Mr. O’Brien’s work is some form of copycat knockoff for his voice is truly original.

The shorter works of poetry could be read as standalones but I strongly encourage all readers to begin with the longer narrative and let the poetry works provide additional context as well as entice you to anxiously wait for the next installment in this series that deserves a long look.

A terrific collection and highly recommended!

• Peter: A Darkened Fairytale (story)
• Peter, Enchantment and Stardust (full poetry)
• Peter: The World - Short Poems & Tiny Thoughts (Vol 1)
• Surreal Peter - Short Poems & Tiny Thoughts (Vol 2)
• Peter: Crank's Time - Short Poems & Tiny Thoughts (Vol 3)

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a trip with Peter 18 Jan. 2015
By Convoke
Format:Kindle Edition
The Peter volumes by William O'Brien are one the most delightful finds in modern publishing. "Surreal Peter" from the series "Peter: A Darkened Fairytale" is precisely what it says: "Short Poems and Tiny Thoughts 2)." If you've read Tiny Thoughts 1, you're already clicking to order this one. If not, you rally can begin your Peter adventures with this excursion into aphoristic wisdom phrased for teh reader today.

Welcome to the surreal world of Peter: A Darkened Fairytale. Some of the strangest ideas have been taken and twisted into a new selection of 27 Short Poems and Tiny Thoughts - Surreal Peter.

As always, the poetry books give hints to the forthcoming novels in the Peter stories. Look out for more escapades throughout the year from Peter, Slip and their bizarre friends.

Peter's realm can turn illogical and confusing at the drop of a hat, but wherever you go, the prose is brave and evocative. Plunge the sea, enter portals undreamed, be the quarry of a witch, live in a magic box and soar with dragons. Grab a magic key and slide it into your mind...

If C.S. Lewis were alive, he'd love the Peter saga. So will you, line by line, thought by thought.

Such excursions are rare in any age. Take these offer by Peter's creator, William O'Brien, and be the better for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful whispers of insanity 8 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Haha ... strange boy
Would you like a journey?
Watch the toys
Tread the beams
Do you want to fly?
Trip to the scene
I am in your head
And I shall never leave

These ‘whispers of insanity’ are not even titled, they just come floating at you from the pages of the book, at times aiming to frighten you:

Fate is turning
Doors now switch
Trapped in darkness
Evil's wish

Other times, the author joins you, traveling by your side in this journey

Such fun
We will have
Together
Walking with death

And always, he offers an outlook for hope, for renewal at the end of this journey. There is always a light that beacons from afar even as we are still in a dark place:

Fire of dragon
Purging the world
Cleanses the palette
Holds new birth

This is a wonderful collection, and when taken together with the body of work that the author, William O’Brien, has created, it illuminates a complete universe of magic in which Peter lives.

Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surreal Indeed! 28 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
In..."SURREAL PETER ~ Short Poems & Tiny Thoughts", the author deals with the demons of insanity. I like his positive twist on life as he dedicates this book "for everyone blessed by the smallest whispers of insanity". This is a somewhat unique way to view life. But then...I for one, find it rather refreshing.

When I was a young child, I was exposed to the fairy tales penned by Brothers Grimm. Whenever I read the musings of Author William O'Brien, these previous fairytales and folklore come to mind. Although the styles and tales are different, there is a familiar thread of creative writing talent to be discovered in this Boxed Collection. It stretches the imagination of its reading audience and will appeal to all ages...both young and old alike. The covers to each of these books are incredible!
