Book Description

25 Feb 2005 1860944949 978-1860944949 2nd Revised edition
As final examinations approach, medical students often become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge required to pass all subjects in one go, including surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, pharmacology, and psychiatry. Students cannot know each of these subjects in as much detail as they did during their individual attachments and they need to concentrate on important topics rather than minutiae. Whereas existing textbooks cover many topics very well and in great detail, they are lengthy and difficult to read in a short space of time; some subjects are poorly covered and give no real understanding of practical management and logical thought processes - the exact requirements for passing finals. In this second edition, each chapter has been extensively rewritten and updated with the help of experts in their respective subjects.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only surgical textbook you will ever need 6 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is absolutely amazing. Having flipped through the pages at a friend's house, I thought it looked a bit dry as there are relatively few pictures and it is all just text. However, he recommended it and the other reviews on here were very favourable so I decided to part with my money. It was a wise choice. Things that I found complex such as fluid and electrolyte balance and what to do exactly in a trauma emergency are now suddenly making as much sense as slamming on the brakes if a child runs out in front of your car! The format of the text is what makes it such a good read. Written as if someone was talking to you, it really does help understanding and remembering all the facts; plus it gives helpful hints here and there on what might come up in finals and how to answer the questions in a structured, smart way. I cannot recommend this book more to any medical student. This is the only surgical textbook you need throughout clinicals and finals.

I read the reviews on line and ordered the book somewhat unsold on its merits. I tend to buy loads of textbooks when it comes to exams as none of them has everything and so I buy them all and spend ages picking the best bits of each. All that was before I came accross Surgical Talk. I havent bought a single surgical text since. This book is completely amazing and has helped me understand subjects that have for years remained confusing. I cant recommend it strongly enough. Do make notes on the spaces provided as this book will stay with you right through to postgraduate exams.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have! 14 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
This book is one of those must have books for your collection. Perfect for students starting out on surgical attachments. The first few chapters are SO helpful. They provide you with a means of answering almost any medical question that can be thrown at you on wards and in exams.

Yes there are typos, but they are obvious. I am revising for finals just now and I am using this book and Rapid Surgery by Obi for surgical revision. Both great books.

Surgical talk has wider uses in that the infor in the early chapters will hold you in good stead for medical attachments as well. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. The authors have done a great job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 4 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
This book initially looks dry and boring, with paragraphs of black-and-white text filling most of the pages. But once you start reading a chapter, you can't put it down. It's incredibly compelling reading, keeping your mind active but with a feeling as if a mentor is teaching you on the subject rather than you just reading facts in a textbook.

Thoroughly recommended for finals, and it doesn't even feel like work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential aid to passing Finals 17 Sep 2005
Format:Paperback
This is a well written book that brings the subjects to life. You can actually read this book like a novel, and not want to put it down. I took it with me on my elective, and read it cover to cover, making notes. I rememeber wishing I had read it in Year 3 at Manchester. This book got me through Finals, and comes highly recommended. I even found it useful through my PRHO year, and re-read chapters before my first week of nights. Even as an SHO I pick it up, and I intend to purchase the 2nd edition. Money well spent, and an essential aid to getting through medical school. Thank you, Andrew Goldberg.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant Suprize 17 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I brought this book on a whim after reading a review of it here on amazon not really expecting much but was amazed to find this book does exactly what it says on the tin - it covers pretty much all the surgery you need for finals in a really easily readable format (and believe me, thats something coming from me!) and gives loads of handy tips for exams. My advice is if you have finals coming up buy it - even if you think the surgical book you already have is good enough, buy it anyway!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book 23 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
You might find it difficult to believe that this book is so good but having used it extensively, along with "Browse's Introduction to the Symptoms and Signs of Surgical Diseases", on surgical attachments it has been instrumental in achieving exam success.

Its a great book to learn from as it is designed specifically for both written and clinical Finals, containing almost everything you need to know and presents it in such a concise format that it can be re-revised rapidly with exams looming (over 2 days). It doesnt matter that there are few diagrams as almost every word in the text is important. This book will arm you with the answers for any surgical question you come across.

I would recommend this whole-heartedly as a revision book and its emphasis on practical aspects will stand anyone in good stead for work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!!!! 14 May 2009
Format:Paperback
Ok so I'm not usually one to go for wordy texts and continuous prose but I loved this book!!! It's such light reading that you can take it to bed and easily read a whole chapter before nodding off to sleep. The simple pencil diagrams are fantastic and it explains the basics so well that you can apply the concepts yourself thereafter. As it says on the back cover, it will actually make you feel like you're having a one-to-one tutorial on each topic. It is a must-buy for undergraduate level surgery!
