Consultant surgeon Sheila Sabatini rules her operating theatre with a sharp tongue and a withering sense of humour. Her dedication and determination to succeed in a maledominated world make her a force to be reckoned with, and her colleagues at the Gillies Hospital have learned the hard way not to mess with her! Sheila's intimidating manner may hide a soft centre, but only those who dare to get close enough discover that; they include administrator and best friend, Joyce, and anaesthetist Jonathan Haslam, a man brave enough to pursue a romantic relationship with the spiky Mrs. Sabatini... Nichola McAuliffe gives a memorable performance as Sheila Sabatini, with Duncan Preston (Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV) starring as Jonathan Haslam. Featuring scripts by Graeme Garden among other contributors, Surgical Spirit was a huge success with the viewing public, running for an impressive seven series between 1989 and 1995. This release collects all seven series on DVD for the first time.

Saw this on tv years ago, when I was a young anaesthetist. Laughed myself sick at the time, and wondered if it would still be funny or just seem dated. Well, it's still priceless! Nicola McAuliffe plays a blinder as Sheila Sabatini, the caustic female surgeon, and her ranting putdowns of her male colleagues are masterpieces of sarcasm. It's sobering to see the institutionalised sexism of that era - we've come a long way, but characters like Sheila helped to change perceptions. The operating theatre setting will be hugely nostalgic to medics of my age - if only the NHS was still like that! But even non medical viewers will have no trouble getting the jokes, and the scripts are wonderful. I'm only part way through series one, but can't wait to see some of my favourite episodes from later series. Lovely, light hearted feel good stuff, the sort of traditional sitcom that nobody produces any more. Enjoy!

A magnificent series, featuring some brilliant comedic lines delivered by a fine cast. Should be compulsory viewing for anyone planning to work in a hospital.

Surgical Spirit, by far, is the best British comedy to brighten our doorsteps, and remains a firm favourite when wanting a morsel of sharp-tongued wit from the brilliant Nichola McAullife.

The plot revolves around the 'Gillies' hospital, more specifically, the surgical unit led under the cake-eating, gossip Joyce Watson (Marji Campi). In a male dominated profession however, it is clear that Sheila Sabatini (McAullife) wears the trousers; sarcastic and witty, if one does not agree with her, be ready to face the wrath of her ever complex but satisfying assault on your very existence. It is only the calming presence of the Head of Anaesthetics, Jonathan Haslam (Duncan Preston), that Sheila can be tamed, at least until Neil Copeland (Emlyn Price) begins talking, and it's back to shouting and screaming into Theatre 1.

If the comedic timing and banter in the break room isn't enough, then the growing love story between Sheila and Jonathan will surely leave you begging for more. The classic "will they won't they" is a running storyline, but for the audience, and master matchmaker Joyce, it is clear they are perfect for each other. The only question left on everyone's lips is whether Sheila can leave her attraction for Italian men to one side and settle for "Mr Yorkshire Man" Jonathan.

From the cast, to the story-lines, to the satisfaction when yet another member of the 'Gillies' is scorned by Sheila, Surgical Spirit is a 'not-to-miss' classic everyone must see. There are only 50 episodes of this remarkable programme, and yet I find myself watching the whole boxset wondering why it stopped.

I had forgotten how funny this TV series was. It is a shame that they didn't make any more series than they did. Mrs Sabatini is a force to be reckoned with for sure.

A brilliant brilliant laugh out loud DVD. A perfect tonic (sorry).

I worked in the NHS in the 80s, and well remember consultants attitude - especially to women of their own rank. I love the way Nichola McAuliffe's character fights back and reduces these male chauvinists to quivering jellies. Well written, sharp and very funny, even if it is a little dated now.

Makes me laugh every time I watch.

This was one of my favourite series when it first came out. I have now watched about 15 episodes and it doesn't disappoint. The cast members are all first class, and the interplay between the characters always sparkles.
