A must read for any would be medical students!, 27 Oct 2004
This review is from: The Surgeon's Rhyme: A Memoir (Paperback)
If ure looking for something a little more different than the usual glut of books doing the rounds this Christmas, have a peek at this little gem....
Basically, a humourous and light hearted account of a students journey through medical school, recounting 'short stories' aswell as debating a number of more serious and contentious issues faced by the medical establishment today.
Whilst this book might not appeal to everyones tastes, i found this book to be a great read - a funny, informative guide for any 'would be' medical student, providing a fascinating insight to the life and work of a doctor, revealing all the things my other books during medical school conveniently forget to mention!
I particularly liked the authors description of the ward rounds, bringing to life the principal characters, almost reminiscent of a scene from 'Carry on Matron'... this book would be well placed on the reading list of anyone thinking of embarking on a career in the medical profession.

A Gripping Read, 9 Dec 2009
This review is from: The Surgeon's Rhyme: A Memoir (Paperback)
In one way or another I have been in close contact with doctors and hospitals for much of my life, yet while respecting enormously their work, mentally I have remained an outsider; I have never as much as watched a hospital drama on TV in my life. Nor did I believe there would ever come a time when I would sit down to read a book like Dr Michael Barrie's 'The Surgeon's Rhyme' and be glued solid to its 300 odd pages. Barrie writes in an easygoing style describing his years at Medical School, his hospital training and work as a GP, with poignantly detailed case histories, which leave us far wiser medically than ever before. But we are offered much more, including his own interesting family medical background and roots, an astute and critical commentary on the NHS, philosophisings and musings on a variety matters, and most importantly throughout loads of humour, the whole written in an impeccable English - oh, that there were more like him! For me there was never a dull moment. A must for those thinking of becoming a doctor.

Anyone who uses the NHS should read this book!, 16 Jan 2007
This review is from: The Surgeon's Rhyme: A Memoir (Paperback)
Thoroughly enjoyable book following the life of medic from training to practising. Although the realistic take on a medic's experience will be useful for prospective med-students, it also provides a useful insight for patients into the decisions a Doctor has to take in order to choose the best treatment. Anyone who uses the NHS should read this book!
