Product Description

Born on Christmas Day 1610 in a Flanders cowshed, Frans Michielszoon van Raveyck grows up to become one of the most singular minds of the 17th century: surgeon, inventor, engineer, explorer, astrologer and proto-scientist, employed at various times - and with somewhat mixed results - in the service of most of the kings of Christendom. This first volume of his biography takes us from his humble nativity through his family's flight to England, his apprenticeship as a surgeon there, and finally to his involvement aboard a Dutch warship in the disastrous naval expedition to Cadiz in the autumn of 1625; an enterprise regarded by connoisseurs of incompetence as the worst-conducted military operation in Britain's entire history. Which young Frans, however, observing the chaos around him, attributes to the expedition having neglected to take a good astrologer along with it...

4.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing and entertaining read, 18 Jan 2011
By
Alan Fisk (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Surgeon's Apprentice (Paperback)
I enjoyed this account of the adventures and misadventures of a Flemish surgeon, his two wives (not at the same time) and his son. All of them are victims and beneficiaries of the Fates, who seem to take a particular interest in them. Readers who enjoyed Biggins' Prohaska tetralogy, a series of novels about an Austrian naval officer in the First World War, will find the same blend of adventure, tests of character, and both wry and waspish comment in this one, which promises to be the first of a new series. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into the past with parallels to the present., 9 Nov 2010

A Sailor of Austria: In Which, Without Really Intending to, Otto Prohaska Becomes Official War Hero No. 27 of the Habsburg Empire (The Otto Prohaska Novels)

The Two-Headed Eagle: In Which Otto Prohaska Takes a Break as the Habsburg Empire's Leading U-boat Ace and Does Something Even More Thanklessly Dangerous (The Otto Prohaska Novels)

Tomorrow the World: In which Cadet Otto Prohaska Carries the Habsburg Empire's Civilizing Mission to the Entirely Unreceptive Peoples of Africa and Oceania (The Otto Prohaska Novels)

The Emperor's Coloured Coat: In Which Otto Prohaska, Hero of the Habsburg Empire, Has an Interesting Time While Not Quite Managing to Avert the First World War (The Otto Prohaska Novels)

As a long time fan of Mr. Biggins' works it was a great surprise to hear that he had a new book coming out after an almost fifteen year hiatus.I was not disappointed. This novel is a return to form for the author. While slow for the first few chapters it picks up speed. A warning though, to new readers. While almost everything he writes about is based in information from the time and the characters are being honest when they say things, don't take all of it seriously because it is after all a satire.

That said, buy all of his books that you can find because they are just the kind of novels that Historical fiction needs.Soulful, witty, and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent author!, 8 Feb 2012

This review is from: The Surgeon's Apprentice (Kindle Edition)
John Biggins is a "wordsmith" to the nth degree. He researches his stories, developes extremely interesting characters and teaches me, along the way, about areas of history that I never knew existed.

This and his 'Otto Prohaska' series should be read immediately if you really call yourself a historical afficianado. Superb stuff and very readable.
