Product Description

From Amazon.com

Although there's no shortage of Trashmen records out there (a 4 CD box set, a live album, outtakes), and none of it's waste product, this expanded version of the Minnesota surf gonzos' 1964 debut (and only contemporary) album is the best way to find out if their trash is worth your cash. The song they're famous for, "Surfin' Bird," is a frat/surf novelty classic that makes "Louie Louie" sound like "Go Away Little Girl." Two West Coast R&B novelties by the Rivingtons, "Papa Oo Mow Mow Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," are knitted together by a pulsing Midwest surf beat, with a harsh monotone vocal giving way at strategic moments to some of the most graphic sounds of regurgitation ever recorded.

If this sounds appealing (and there's no earthly reason it shouldn't), there are more delights within, although only "Bird Bath" attempts (unsuccessfully) to match the hit. You get some nicely executed surf instrumentals, slightly surf-inflected covers of "It's So Easy" and "Money," and some especially commissioned (from a friend of the band) surf and hotrod songs crammed full of period jargon. Bonus tracks include a demo of "Surfin' Bird"'s too-close-for-comfort followup, "Bird Dance Beat," and a sweetly goofy Christmas single that has Santa and his reindeer doing the Watusi with Peggy Sue, Short Fat Fannie, and other regular partygoers of the era. --Ken Barnes

CD Description

ORIGINAL 1964 ALBUM WITH 9 BONUS TRACKS INCLUDES THE HIT SINGLE ‘SURFIN’ BIRD’ Following the success of the 2009 campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to the Christmas number 1 slot in the UK (defeating the X Factor winner), a plethora of similar campaigns were launched in the lead up to Christmas 2010. Most of these floundered and either appeared low on the chart or failed to chart at all. The notable exception to this was ‘Surfin’ Bird’ by The Thrashmen which crashed in at #3, an undeniable success for a campaign which lacked the high-profile backing of other songs. The campaign was built on a massively successful online movement which arose from the use of the song in an episode of the popular cartoon ‘Family Guy’ and the song has also recorded by numerous artists including the Ramones, The Cramps and the thrash metal band Sodom as well as being used in movies and television shows including Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. This re-issue of the band’s only full length album proves however that the band were much more than a novelty act that can be reduced to one single, highlighting the fact that they were actually a highly accomplished rock’n’roll group. This release features the whole of the original 1964 album plus 9 bonus tracks which include singles and B-sides.

Surfing for fun 9 Dec 2008

Don't be fooled by the suits and the fresh-faced smiles. The Trashmen may have arrived late for the surf party, but this album contains some of the most exciting music in the genre. The title track is their classic contribution to rock music, so revved-up, so d-u-m-b, that The Ramones covered it. There are a few well-worn surf standards here but everything on the disc stands up with the possible exception of 'Bird Bath', an attempt to recreate their masterpiece in an alternative guise. The Latin-flavoured 'Malaguena' is a highlight, as is the cool 'Tube City', but almost all of the music is exhilarating.

Surfin' Bird was on the charts the week the Beatles debuted and both them and the Kingsmen were the last of the American groups to play American rock'n'roll before all the rules changed. Both these groups had in common with the Beatles the song Money.
However only 2 singles made it to the U K but the Trashmen became just as legendary and could even be seen as the first garage rockers.
But it must have sounded great in a court room when both Rivingtons singles were demonstrated to the judge along with the Trashmen's Surfin' Bird as a way to show plagiarism. The result of the case is that the Rivingtons' names had to be added in the credits and one other song had to credit them as well!

Bird is the word on the streets! You have got to buy this baby! Surfs up!Surfin' Bird is the best song, but there are many good there like Malaguena is pure surf, Bird Bath is a wierd one and Bird Dance Beat (demo version) is fun. There's is also a demo version of Surfin' Bird which is fun to hear how the first take was. So, everybody, do the bird dance.
