It'll grow on you! 4 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Before I purchased this CD, my BBs collection consisted mostly of albums from the Pet Sounds period and beyond. Therefore I was initially disappointed by the comparatively 'primitive' nature of the songs, but this was not to last.
As I listened more and more I became drawn into the sheer potency of many of the wonderful ballads and rock and roll classics it encompasses.

Surfer Girl was an astronomic leap forward from the simple three chord 'rock-outs' of their first two albums, SURFIN' SAFARI and SURFIN' USA. This is obvious from the start of the opening track, the beautiful, complex SURFER GIRL. This is one of the many Brian Wilson ballads on this album that show just how far the emotional strength of his records had grown (The thoughtful IN MY ROOM and the heartfelt YOUR SUMMER DREAM are two such highlights, containing stunningly emotive chord changes and lyrics). Despite the complexity of this new musical direction, SURFER GIRL is still peppered with the sort of classic surf-rock that made them famous (The storming CATCH A WAVE, the smooth, shuffling LITTLE DEUCE COUPE and the chiming HAWAII are good examples). Though most of the album is great, there are some real stinkers on there too (The instrumental THE ROCKIN' SURFER and the naff SOUTH BAY SURFERS are clunky and uninteresting) but overall the album is varied, fun, thoughtful and a definite leap forward for the group.

SHUT DOWN VOL. 2 doesn't fit together as well as SURFER GIRL but contains some absolute classics (The cruising anthem FUN FUN FUN and the superb cover version of WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE are two particular stand-out tracks). Brian's ballads on this album are also absolutely exceptional (The exquisite DON'T WORRY BABY and the poignant WARMTH OF THE SUN are real classics). There is some obvious filler tracks on the album, but even these don't pit the depths of the unlistenable instrumentals of SURFER GIRL (DENNY'S DRUMS and 'CASSIUS' LOVE... are complete non-entities
and the cover of LOUIE LOUIE is a bit of a disaster, but these don't seem to irritate as much as the filler on SURFER GIRL).

The bonus tracks are mostly pointless curios, but the glorious 'I DO' is a forgotten classic. This double album is worth getting, but it would be advisable to buy some of their later albums first.

Surfer Girl shows the Beach Boys continuing with great surf-rock but also developing nicely with increasingly beautiful ballads, such as the title track (which Brian had written a year earlier) and other wonderful cuts like "The Surfer Moon," "In My Room," and "Your Summer Dream." The good rockers are the hot-rod cut "Little Deuce Coupe," "Catch a Wave," " Hawaii," and two fine instrumentals. Of the three remaining cuts, "Surfer's Rule" and "Our Car Club" are average, but have fine melodies, while "South Bay Surfer" is atrocious.

Shut Down Vol. is not nearly as consistent. It has fine cuts with "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Don't Worry Baby," "Warmth of the Sun," and "Keep an Eye on Summer," and Carl's title track instrumental is a good rocker, but the rest is average at best, and, overall, this is the worse of the first four Beach Boys albums.

This twofer pairs the third and fifth albums recorded by the Beach Boys. Their fourth album, a themed collection of car songs, contains four songs (including the title track) previously released on earlier albums and was therefore put on a different twofer to avoid duplication on the same CD.

The first album here, Surfer girl, yielded the double-sided American hit featuring the title track and Little deuce coupe, plus a further American hit, In my room. The second album here, Shut down volume 2, yielded two further American hits, Fun fun fun (though the album version differs slightly from the single version, added as a bonus track to this twofer) and Don't worry baby. None of these songs charted in Britain, which was gripped by Beatle mania at the time. However, Brits eventually came to love the music of the Beach Boys and these songs are now regarded as classics on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Surfer girl album is the stronger of the two albums here, with seven of the twelve songs being surfing music, of which I particularly like the title track, Hawaii and Catch a wave. Shut down volume 2 starts strongly with the two American hits and contains another outstanding track (Warmth of the sun) and covers of Why do fools fall in love and Louie Louie It is a fine album in its own way but not quite as strong overall as Surger girl.

Three bonus tracks include the single version of Fun fun fun, a version of In my room recorded in German and a previously unreleased recording of a song, I do, that the Beach Boys wrote for the Castells.

If you enjoy the early music of the Beach Boys, you will find plenty to get excited about here.
