The mono & stereo releases of all their sixties albums are nice for the collector.

Although mono and stereo versions of "Surfer Girl" were released in the sixties, the mono version of "Surfer Girl" was previously unreleased on CD. The stereo version is in my opinion better then the mono version. Brian Wilson was still learning (but rapidly growing) as a producer. The mono version reveals more the uneveness in power in the song-recording.

When you are not a collector I advise you to buy the twofers (two different albums on one CD). The twofers have a booklet, bonus tracks, the sound quality is the same and they are cheaper.

Although there are only 6 months between the recording of this, the Beach Boys 3rd album, and the previous Surfin USA album, musically it shows a large step forward. On this album Brian Wilson produced and arranged a much more lush sound and songs, production was becoming more complex. Alan Jardine makes a welcome return to the band(having departed in early 1962) which means that the six man original line up which started out in 1961 are together again and for the first time as Capitol recording artists. The line up consisted of Jardine, David Marks, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Dennis and Carl Wilson. Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe and eventually In My Room were all big hits. Brian Wilson begins to introduce even more instruments to the tracks beyond the regular drums, guitars and piano. Keyboards play a much larger part on this album and stringed instruments such as harp and violin are introduced along with saxophones. This is a truly wonderful album and another true classic.

Surfer Girls features original member David Marks and is, as the title suggests, a bona fide surf-themed album.

It boasts a number of classics plus some superb songs that never turn up on 'best of' packages.

The album has that classic early Sixties feel and is a joy to listen to (whether in mono or stereo).

The first really great Beach Boys album 5 Nov. 2012
By steve_manassas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
SURFER GIRL, The Beach Boys' third album for Capitol Records, was the first produced by Brian Wilson on his own (the previous two, Surfin Safari and Surfin Usa (Mono & Stereo Remasters), were co-produced by the late Capitol A&R man, Nik Venet). This album was The Boys' first really great effort; there's not a bad track in the lot, including the title song, "Catch A Wave," "In My Room," "Hawaii," "Our Car Club," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Your Summer Dream," and more. Originally released on CD as a 1989 Mobile Fidelity "two-fer" (Surfer Girl & Surfin Usa), it was released by Capitol as a different "two-fer" (with SHUT DOWN, VOLUME 2) in 1990. That "two-fer" was replaced by an individual stereo CD in 1994, but was reissued in 1997 as a Canadian import, and then remastered and reissued in the USA in 2001. (Actually, Little Deuce Coupe (Mono & Stereo Remasters) was the official follow-up to SURFER GIRL, but Capitol rejected pairing those two albums, because the tracks "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Our Car Club" would have appeared twice on the same CD.)

The 2012 reissue of SURFER GIRL has both the stereo mix of the album found on the previous CD issues, as well as the mono mix, which makes its CD debut. Both mixes are superb. The back liner notes differ slightly. In the paragraph beginning with "And for old friends of The Beach Boys, there is plenty of that old rockin' surfer beat too...," the "two-fer" contains a reference to the Four Freshmen tribute, "Your Summer Dream." The 2012 edition refers to the single "Little Deuce Coupe" instead.

As I said in previous reviews, get this CD if you want both the mono and stereo mixes of the album. If you only care about stereo, stick with the earlier "two-fer," which has three bonus tracks.

Simply WOOW 7 Nov. 2012

The first time I tried to order this album, I knew nothing about this. But a friend of mine recommended this album as one of the Beach Boys greatest album. And the result... AMAZING!!
The mono version sounds less clean. But it's much better than the stereo version, which they put their voices in appropriate but the instruments sounded like playing in a room far behind them.
The drawback of this album is the lack of information about the album. Perhaps the Beach Boys could see The Beatles album remastered for its package.
But after all, the conclusion is, the materials on this album are simple but meaningful. Although it can not be equated with Pet Sounds.

My first beach boys album 23 Feb. 2013

I don't remember how I came across this, but I had the mono version as a kid. In my Room was my favorite song. Very comforting to a 7 year old. I bought this versions of the album AGAIN because of the incredible sound quality. It's the only one of the remastered series that i felt was worth the revisitation, though others will disagree. The remastering brings out the warmth that I originally found on this record. And it's great to know, after all these years, Brian and Co are still making beautiful music together.
