Surface lasted one season on NBC before cancellation, but Surface: The Complete Series on DVD will keep the show's exciting, Spielbergian suspense around for a long while. The primetime drama, involving several characters - in different parts of the world - all having similar brushes with fantastic creatures, instantly draws comparisons to Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Add a government conspiracy (complete with a cover story to force one community's evacuation) to prevent the public from learning of the existence of a previously unknown life form, and the parallels with Close Encounters grow thick. But it's not a problem: the many twists and turns in Surface's far-ranging storyline, and the nature of the species that slowly becomes a factor in the survival of the human race, are compelling on their own terms.

Created by twin brothers and television writers-producers-directors Josh and Jonas Pate (LA Dragnet), Surface stars rangy beauty Lake Bell as oceanographer and single mom Dr. Laura "Dee" Daughtery. While doing some research in a submersible at the bottom of the sea, Dee discovers a seemingly bottomless pit leading to astonishing depths in the Earth. But she also bumps into a sea monster that emanates electrical charges strong enough to wreak havoc with her vessel. Meanwhile, a Louisiana-based insurance salesman, Rich (Jay R. Ferguson), is traumatized when he sees his brother dragged away by a similar creature, and a 14-year-old boy, Miles (Carter Jenkins), raises one of the beasts after it hatches from an egg. Throughout all this, a scientist (Rade Sherbedgia) and a heavy-handed national security agent (Ian Anthony Dale) are trying to unlock the mystery of the species, which appears to be growing in number at the same time strange forces are affecting the oceans. Naturally, there's a story behind the story - government and corporate shenanigans and all that. That stuff gets a little tedious and, truth be told, a couple of the show's protagonists are among the most unlikable people seen in series television in a long while. But despite its premature end after a mere 15 episodes, Surface finally offers an original, unsettling, and even surreal vision of the world going through apocalyptic transformations. The final image of the final show lingers in the imagination a long time. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars where are all the fish?, 16 Jun 2007
why this show was cancelled i'll never understand...if you take it on board as an adventure interweaving themes from Jaws, ET, the X-Files, and half a dozen other "atmospheres" all seamlessly combined in a genuinely satisfying and honestly entertaining mixture, it is actually addictive..has all the family friendly qualities of a Speilburg movie with all the darkness of the X-Files..and a really intrigueing pairing of
the female lead character (who thankfully manages to be far more convincing than most other leading ladies by virtue of the fact she has a decent collection of sensible shoes..we are not expected to believe she runs along a beach in 4 inch fashionable heels for example lol..)
the lead male character is unusual and together they make the most convincing "mulder and Scully" pairing i've seen since the originals (of course)...
dunno why it was cancelled ....absolutely no idea what so ever..

4.0 out of 5 stars Pushing the boat out, 31 Dec 2006
By Mr. David Halliday (Ilkeston Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
A young boy and his friend come across some weird eggs floating out in the bay on which they live, he takes one home and chaos ensues as he raises the creature inside.
A marine biologist teams up with a man who lost his brother to a huge sea creature and they head of to gather evidence that there's something going on in the worlds oceans. They find themselves being chased by what appears to be a government agency determined to make sure the truth does not get out.
In amongst these main plotlines are many other related 'sightings' and lives affected by the creepy goings on in the water.
This doesn't pretend to be some plausible fact based story or to take itself too seriously but instead manages to walk the thin line between keeping the story buzzing along, keeping the viewer gripped and enough glimpses of whatever it is that's taking over the worlds oceans.
There are a fair few CGI effects and for the most part they are of a pretty good quality and overall work well.
The acting is generally of a good standard too and even the youngsters involved hold their end up well, which is just as well as they have a fairly large part of the plot to carry.
The tension is built well and there are some interesting surprises along the way and as sci-fi goes this can hold it's head up and not look shabby up against the big boys of T.V.
The downside? The people who owned the series decided that it wasn't working and cancelled the show after series 1. this has become so commonplace nowadays as viewers preferrances are ignored and accountants choose when it's time to terminate a programme.
Fortunately the final episode ends in such a manner that although it would have been great to have had a 2nd series at least you're not left completely in the lurch. The fact is also that this is worth watching for the 15 episodes that were made.
The extras are not really of any worth but the picture quality is good,(including most of the CGI which stands up pretty well), and the 5.1 surround mix is lively and has some good effects that are well steered.
If you view this as a one off,( an extended mini series if you like), then you are unlikely to be disappointed and will find that there is much to enjoy.
If you like well paced plotting that holds your attention for over 9 hours of a solid sci-fi tale then you could do a lot worse than splash out on 'Surface'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Series Cancelled by Incompetents
This was really a great series and should have continued. We have seen this a few times (e.g. Firefly) where an excellent idea gets trashed - probably because of internal politics... Read more
