More About the Author

Tony Butt has a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of Plymouth, UK, and worked with the Coastal Processes Research Group at Plymouth for seven years. He has published 12 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and over 200 other articles on waves and the coastal environment for a non-scientific audience, plus several chapters, forewords and other contributions. He has been Staff Oceanographer for the Surfers Path magazine since 1998, and runs short courses on basic oceanography and meteorology for surfers and other coastal water users.

Tony works with non-profit organizations such as Surfers Against Sewage, Save the Waves and the Surfrider Foundation, trying to convince people that the coastline is a highly-delicate and poorly understood part of the environment, and the more we interfere with it the more problems it will cause us.

Tony is also a dedicated big-wave surfer and has appeared in numerous major television documentaries as well as being invited to several international big-wave events.

This book/e-book is a fantastic explanation of the world of surf science answering all the questions you have ever had about the ocean and many that you had never thought to ask! It is clearly explained in plain language easy to understand by the lay reader whilst also having plenty of depth for the more informed student of the subject. All this is backed up by clear diagrams which add clarity to the textual explanations. Perhaps surprisingly this book is also an absorbing and entertaining read with a writing style that will be familiar to any readers of 'The Surfer's Path' magazine (now defunct) where the author had a regular column which was, in my opinion, the highlight of a fantastic magazine. If you have ever felt curious to understand more clearly the workings of the ocean and weather systems or simply want to score good surf more consistently at home or whilst travelling then I would highly recommend this book. There are not too many science books out there you read cover to cover and then dive back in for more! This book is one of them.

This is an excellent book which does well to communicate the "basics" without overwhelming the reader. There's plenty of detail and some good explanations of the science. When I say basics, don't think the content isn't there - it's just I'm sure he could have gone into a lot of unnecessary depth (for me) which would have only served to confuse. Here the balance is just right.

The book is a straightforward demystification of the mystery of ocean swell. Good diagrams for the uninitiated explain concepts which are normally difficult to visualize.
