After years of being asked, 'when are you going to make an acoustic album', Roddy Frame has finally done it with 2003's SURF. After 22 years of superlative recording he has managed to record his masterpiece. This is Roddy's 'Blonde on Blonde', his 'Songs for Swingin' Lovers', his 'Sgt Pepper'. The music and lyrics are as intelligent, inventive and addictive as you might expect - but the real revelation is Roddy's astonishing voice. There is not a male singer-songwriter in the world today who is not eclipsed by the gifts on show here. I've had this CD for two years, but I still can't stop playing it, and having seen Roddy perform many of these songs live recently I expect to be playing it almost constantly for a long time to come. Sad, touching, evocative, lyrical, funny, sardonic, heart-breaking - this is a towering achievement.
