About the Author
World Champion Simon Hammond first started surf kayaking as a young member of his local scout troop in Bude, North Cornwall. Simon still remembers those early days where he and his friends spent more time swimming than kayaking!
As a young boy Simon watched paddlers competing in slalom kayaks and shoes but his first surf craft turned out to be an Australian designed Raider surf ski. He has a passion for most sports and as a teenager enjoyed surfing, rock climbing and rugby but it was on a ski that he showed his real potential by reaching the finals of the English Open in his very first competition.
Simon and his wife Nicola returned to Bude after their college years and took over the family business Shoreline Outdoor Pursuits. As the business has developed so has their coaching experience with Simon now coaching outdoor pursuits and teaching physical education at the local school.
A return to surf competition in the late 90’s coincided with Simon developing as a top BCU level 5 surf kayak coach. During his trip to the 2001 Worlds in Santa Cruz he recognised the qualities that made Kenny King World Champion. On the West coast of Ireland in 2003 it was a very focused and confident Simon Hammond that won heat after heat on his own way to becoming the World number one.
Simon is a regular contributor of articles to the Canoeing press and this is his first book.

Wow! What a great book. At first I just enjoyed the wonderful photography but then the quotes on each picture drew me into the text and that was it I was hooked. Simon makes this subject so easy to understand I can't wait to get back in the surf and put it all into action.
The chapters cover everything from starting off to the most complex of techniques and much more besides. This is a book for anyone interested in kayaking or indeed surfing. In fact any sports coach would appreciate the way in which techniqes and situations are illustrated using analogies to a whole variety of other sports.
Great value for money, a real must have, buy it now!

Simon Hammond is a world champion surf kayaker in the UK. This book is published in England and available through Amazon.com.uk (Shipping is a little steep to the US.) The book is aimed at beginner or intermediate surf kayakers. It does have short sections on skills like aerials and tube riding which are fairly advanced. I've been paddle surfing for a few years now, I started in sit-on-tops, then surf kayaks and waveskis. I'm a slow learner and not very athletic and wish I had found this book about three years ago when I was getting started. It gives clear ideas on technique and strategy that point out things that were not intuitive to me when I was starting. After reading the book, each time I go out now I've been working on some of the more advanced techniques and thinking about Simon's ideas for technique for the basic skills. Some of Simon's hints conflict with advice I've got from others who I thought were pretty good, but the new ideas seem to work and have improved my style and confidence at planning moves on the waves. I'm already doing some new stuff and getting better technique at skills I thought I was already pretty good at so it was worth the shipping cost from the UK for me to buy the book even though I'm probably an intermediate paddler. Most of the explanations are very clear and it talks about developing strategies for attacking waves and linking turns and moves to help you move to advanced surfing instead of just riding the waves down the line.
Some of the sections could use some better illustrative photographs for explaining moves. The section that deals with pop-outs, enders, and cartwheels is not very clearly written or illustrated. Improvements might also include an expanded section for beginners on how to wet exit, how to do high braces to recover, correct technique bracing while side surfing and some information on rolling or at least references to good rolling instruction like Eric Jackson's method. My youngest son pointed out that the person on cover looks like he is going to kill his shoulders holding his paddle over his head. I assume the publisher liked the picture of the young surfer though having a good time. Also the information on judging waves for paddling out and techniques etc, might be appropriate in the first chapters for beginners.
The book is an excellent introduction to surf kayaking if you are interested in getting started and probably worth buying if you are an intermediate interested in sharpening your skills.

This is THE book that I recommend to any newcomers to the sport or students working towards their BCU star awards. Simon is a well respected coach and former high performance World Champion, and he uses his experience and some well thought-through analogies to explain techniques, etiquette and safety.
If you want to take a kayak into the surf zone, get this book as it will tell you some things you will NEED to know to have fun and stay safe.
