Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Two mismatched college students (John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga) find themselves trapped together during a cross-country road trip, trying to make it home for the holidays. She can't stand him, and he just wants to get to LA, where a sexy "sure thing" is waiting to greet him with open arms. It's not hard to predict where this sweetly old-fashioned romantic comedy is going to end up, but along the way there are many pleasures to be had. Director Rob Reiner, in his second feature (after This Is Spinal Tap), has a nice eye for the kitschy flotsam found along the American highway, and his identification with the college kids doesn't condescend to them one bit. The movie helped make a star of John Cusack, who gives a delightfully spritzy performance--kind of a precursor to his similarly energetic, likeable turn in Say Anything. Given the usual crass tenor of Hollywood college movies, The Sure Thing is something to treasure. --Robert Horton

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite comedy of all time 18 Sep 2001
Format:VHS Tape
Yes it's a 'college' movie. Yes there's a bikini-clad young lady on the cover (Nicolette Sheridan in a beautifully restrained, gorgeous airhead role). But this isn't just a college movie. Particularly as the film really only gets into its stride once it hits the open road. Daphne Zunige is a pre-Monica Geller, anal type, who's off to see her dull preppie boyfriend in L.A. John Cusack is 'Gib', a typical college freshman on his way to L.A. (where you can get a 'totally bitchin' education, dude') to see his friend Lance (Anthony Edwards, pre Top Gun), and hook up with the eponymous Sure Thing. The plot may be old hat, and the format hackneyed, but performances of sheer charm from Cusack and Zunige, together with great acting from a supporting cast that includes Tim Robbins in a cameo role as showtune-singing Gary make this a film everyone will love, however many times they watch it. Every scene is perfectly constructed, and Rob Reiner's script offers even more quotable gems than his earlier 'This is Spinal Tap'. Don't judge a film by its cover. Just watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars US College Gem ! 24 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Yeah, yeah, five stars you're going to ask yourself at the end of this film, however, I grew up with this film. Alright it might be a US college film but it's one that doesn't fall into the trap of being like "10 things I hate about you", which is absolute pants. Cusack is at his best, making this film as watchable as "Ferris Buellers Day Off". Worth it purely for the "Nick's a guy who'll let you spew in his car" scene. Go out and get it. A must for all film reviewers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any Cusack fan 31 Aug 2004
Format:VHS Tape
This was the first Cusack movie I ever saw, and though he has since starred in many Hollywood greats (notably Being John Malkovic and High Fidelity) it still remains my favourate Cusack movie.
The film follows the adventures of two dipolar college students thrown together on a cross-country journey one summer. John Cusack plays the slobbish slacker up against Zuniga's straight-laced intellectual. Whilst the story-line itself doesn't have any shocking twists or turns, it's the dialogue between the two central characters that gives the film it's value. Their contrasting 'odd couple' personalities light up the film the whole way through and clever script-work provides a generous helping of laughs mixed with genuinely heart-warming scenes. Whilst the format of the average road movie may have changed over the last 20 years, this movie has not aged one bit, and still holds its own in comparison to it's modern-day counterparts.
I thoroughly recommend this film to anyone.
