This is a must read for anyone interested in military history or just to hear the most incredible stories of selfless courage quite literally against the odds. When you read about Noel Chavasse, I defy you not to have tears in your eyes. A great job by General de la Billiere!

Soldier and author General Sir Peter De La Billière ranks amongst the greatest of post-WW2 British military commanders. He served in every conflict from Korea to the first Gulf War and ended that career as a four-star General with two Knighthoods (Knight Commander of the Bath and Knight Commander of the British Empire - the latter of which superseded the CBE already earned) a DSO, two MCs and a Legion of Merit. This was the man placed in charge of those special forces who stormed the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. Ten years later he was the British Forces commander under General Norman Schwarzkopf in the first Gulf War. In short, Peter de la Billière fully understands the subject of courage and it is because of that understanding that we get a completely different and most refreshing slant on the subject of the first 150 years of what is probably the most prestigious medal of all.

Within the British system, each of the significant honours and awards carries the appropriate post-nominal letters and each has its own place in the overall pecking order. Even different Knighthoods are so arranged with Knight of the Garter being the most senior. As such, therefore, it ranks first amongst all knighthoods (and several people have more than one). The Victoria Cross, however, is the most senior award of all. Consequently, the letters VC will appear first after the name of any recipient - even if that person is also a KG!

Another small aside is that whereas all honours and awards may be withdrawn for reasons of, say, dishonesty etc, unlike all others, once awarded, the VC may not be withdrawn under any circumstances whatsoever.

I bought this book for my father and he loved it, as did my husband and our next door neighbour. A really good selection of some of the most heroic actions ever!

This book is the story of the Victoria Cross and some of the men who won it.
Instituted in 1856 on the orders of Queen Victoria it has been awarded 1354 times(3 double awards)to date-2004 but has been rescinded 8 times because of criminal activity by the holder.
After a good short history of the medal and a discussion on courage the author gives in detail the history of 11 winners. There are seperate chapters on Canadian,Gurkha anmd Indian winners.
There is also an interesting chapter on phoney claims.
The book could have done with more photography and a line listing of all VCs.

I ordered this book after a vist to the National Arboretum in Staffordshire where I was struck by the debt this country owes to our armed forces. These chapters tell of the 'ordinary' people who exhibited extra-ordinary selfless courage.

This is a set of stories of men that have won the Victoria Cross. It includes a nice informative foreword about the history of the VC and it ends with some stories of fake VC winners. Not bad, if you're into this sort of thing.

The book is very good , but I have seen better ones , the print could of been a bit more larger , I am not keen on books with very small print, this is not to say the print in this book too small , its just I like larger print
