5.0 out of 5 stars Supertramp's unabridged autobiography 24 Jan 2004
By Touring Mars VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Basically the same as "The Autobiography of Supertramp", there are two major differences. The first is the inclusion of 'School' (from 1974's 'Crime Of The Century'), and the other is that 'Goodbye Stranger' and 'The Logical Song' are here in there complete forms rather than in shortened form, which is a real improvement.
This is really essential Supertramp, since 'The Very Best of...Vol. 2' is almost by definition a misnomer. The 'very best' tracks are right here. As such, it's not a definitive retrospective. Infact, you'd be forgiven for thinking that 1974 was the first time Supertramp ever recorded anything, as there is nothing here from their first two albums. There are 5 of the 7 tracks that constitute the album 'Crime of the Century', rendering that album almost (but not completely) obsolete. Also, 1979's 'Breakfast In America' is well covered here, with 4 songs. The best two tracks from 'Even In The Quietest Moments' are here too, and that's nearly it. The later albums of 'Famous Last Words' and 'Brother, Where You Bound' (minus Hodgson by this stage) are scarcely touched upon, as is 'Crisis? What Crisis?', which is largely overlooked. All in all though, this compilation is a great way to get to know and love Supertramp. On the strength of the singles alone ('Logical Song', 'Breakfast in America', 'Dreamer' and 'Give A Little Bit'), it's worth the cover charge. But the inclusion of some really big hitting album tracks, like the stunning 'Hide In Your Shell' (from 'Crime..') and 'From Now On' (from 'Even In The Quietest Moments') encourage you to explore the Supertramp back catalogue in more depth. Possibly with the exception of 'Cannonball', there isn't a bad song on the album, and there is plenty to get your teeth into.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Supertramp Fan /Music Lovers Must !! 20 July 2002
Format:Audio CD
If you have no Supertramp cds this is a crime on it's own,but even if you have a few of their albums and you thought you were covered think again. This compilation is without a doubt the cream of their totally underrated career and is testimony to their innovation and high standard of recording and production.Supertramp fall into that exclusive club where high quality recordings and innovation(which the British do so well) stand tall above tied churned out rock songs which are soon forgotten.Digitally remastered to enhance and bring out the best of their top work, this album should be listened to at high volumes.Every self respecting rock lover should have this album.

Shame about the inclusion of "Cannonball" over something far better like "Fool's Overture".
Excellent value for the price, don't hesitate to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favourites for sure 23 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD
One of my all time favourites for sure. This album presents some of the best Supertramp hits from 1974-1982 Without a shadow of a doubt Supertramp provided some of the best music of the 1970's and early 80's School is a remarkable commentary on the alienation and frustration many feel during their school years. "Goodbye Stranger -which beautifully blends the vocal talents of Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies -is all about quitting drugs and came out at the same time as David Bowies Ashes to Ashes which explores a similar theme at a time when the libertine trends of the 1960's and excess of the 1970s had drawn tio a close and the world was forced to sober up. The Logical Song is my favourite of favourites and deals with the yearning for ones lost childhood -a time of idyllic and beautiful innocence before being forcibly moved into a cold and clinical world-a world obsessed with "reason" and rejecting feeling and intuition Rudy deals with the loneliness and pain of a man who has been ignored by those around him and has never found love and companionship.Something that is quite common in todays world While Hide In your Shell and Give a Little Bit exhorts people to give and recieve love and thereby bringhappiness to themselves and others Regardless of the message this is great music and also includes wonderful hits like Dreamer,Crime of the Century,Take the Long Way Home,Its Raining Again and Cannonball

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless pop musuic. 6 July 2012
By Alan
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These tracks just don't age,and several current bands have already sampled Supertramp..Gym Class Heroes for one.Supertramp seemed very serious at the time I first heard them..but having been to see Roger Hodgson in concert recently I realised just what a superb composer he is.Classic 70's pop but relevant today, great value set of music..essential.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surely deserving a critical reappraisal 6 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
The most surprising thing about Supertramp and one I still can't really get my head around us that they were an English band. Everything about them is so American from the vocal styles of key members Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson to the lyrics and music - a kind of jazzier, AOR version of prog rock. Pretty much the epitome of everything that punk stood against yet, despite being one of the world's most unfashionable groups, their biggest success was after the three chord revolution in 1979 with the Breakfast In America LP.

The Very Best Of Supertramp is clearly intended to be a compilation spanning the band's whole career yet 10 of the 15 tracks featured come from just two LPs - four from BIA and six often-lengthy tracks from their breakthrough album, 1974's Crime Of The Century. Highlights of the COTC songs include the Pink Floyd-like title track, School which sounds more like Genesis and Dreamer, the band's first big hit single. Despite the prog-leanings, Davies and Hodgson also had a strong pop sensibility with virtually every track on this compilation including a catchy melody or musical motif.

Following COTC, the band released two reasonably similar albums Crisis What Crisis? including the superb harmonies of Ain't Nobody But Me and Even In The Quietist Moments before crossing over to the more poppy landmark which is Breakfast In America. The Logical Song and title track are of course present on this compilation as memorable hit singles with the other tracks featured being Goodbye Stranger with its incredibly catchy chorus and Take The Long Way Home. All of these songs are excellent with fine playing and instrumentation and a crystal clear sound.
