Book Description

16 Mar 2009 Cultographies

Banned by the Carpenter estate, Todd Haynes' experimental biopic Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (which uses Barbie dolls to narrate the tragic life of the American singer) has become a cult hit because of both its controversy and its rarity. This study details the film's fascinating history: its production and initial reception, its journey through the courts, and its bootleg circulation among fans. It also explores Superstar's rich, provocative, and moving content, paying close attention to the film's aesthetics, generic form, and cultural position as a hybrid text.

1.0 out of 5 stars A complete piece of nonsense! 9 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This production, which relates to an attempt to encapsulate the life of Karen Carpenter in a film featuring a bunch of puppets,is,for me,a complete waste of time and money, and it ended up in the trashcan fairly rapidly.
There's no accounting for taste of course, thankfully we're not all the same, but anybody interested in the sad and tragic events which eventually led to the demise of this wonderful singer, will not find that this bizarre and inadequate production adds anything to their understanding of the situation
The sooner it disappears from the list of Amazon offerings, the better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights 1 Feb 2010
By Musiclover - Published on Amazon.com

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave me a further look into a movie I have enjoyed throughout the years. I have been a fan of Karen Carpenter since 1971 and found the movie to be an interesting yet positive look at her life and career. The book helped to answer some questions I had concerning it's making and the banning of the movie. I felt it was wrong for Richard Carpenter to ban the movie, but at the same point Todd Haynes did not have the rights to use the music. Although, I get the feeling Richard Carpenter wanted this movie banned because it hit on the truth and showed him in a somewhat negative manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and interesting take on the infamous cult video 6 May 2009
By Sean Witzman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have been a fan of SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY ever since first seeing it on a bootleg VHS eight or nine years ago. I even got to watch the film in a crowded indie theater at an invitation only screening. The author does a great job of describing exactly what it is about Todd Haynes film that is so captivating. If you are a fan of the Todd Haynes film and are looking for more insight into its creation, distribution, and meaning than I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good read 30 May 2009
By somethingtosay - Published on Amazon.com

I found this book to be quite informative on the making and symbolism of this fantastic cult film. It gave me more understanding on the movie.

I have enjoyed watching this movie over 20 times now and see something different each time.

I am still waiting and hoping for it's official re-release.
5.0 out of 5 stars The only book out there on this short film! 25 Mar 2014
By Nick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is definitely worth it! You are given the insights on the inspiration, making, and bootlegging of the film and all your questions will be answered with how it was done and all of the blurry clips recorded with the cameras on some scenes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Superstar 27 April 2009
By Mary Lynn Kirkwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
What a rip off. This has nothing to do with the title except self gratification and self praise on th use of "Barbie": type dolls to tell an unauthorized story on video that is never told. It has nothing to do with Karen Carpenter, per se
