Supersilent were formed in Oslo in 1997 by producer/sound-artist Helge Sten and the free jazz trio "Veslefrekk". The idea of the collective is to get together for recordings and concerts and simply freeform without any discussion about what they are going to do beforehand. This kind of avant-gardism can often sound enticing on paper but abominable on the CD player, yet Supersilent are living proof that interesting and listenable results can be achieved from such conceptual origins. This 4th album proper (their first outing was a triple album that comprised numbers 1, 2 and 3) is a truly syncretic mix that covers much of what they have explored on previous recordings, namely hardcore, jazz and ambient sounds with a liberal sprinkling of ethno-tribalism and Eastern spirituality. It's a necessarily discursive ramble through music's more esoteric combinations. There may be indulgence and loose cannons aplenty, but there are also many moments of impressive coherence and more than the occasional flash of pure, incandescent magic. --Paul Sullivan

BBC Review

6.1 - Like a Giorgio Moroder score for a 70's horror film. Doesn't sound like synthesizer music of the last fifteen years, more like they took a left turn at Tomita or Vangelis. Sort of. There's a mellotron lurking in there as well, I'm sure of it. 6.1 is spooky and disruptive and serene and threatening. It doesn't sound like any free improv I've heard lately (Supersilent don't precompose anything). Great clattering, hollowed-out drumming in the background.

6.2 - Gorgeous, mellifluous tones. Arve Henriksen's trumpet comes on at times like a bansurai flute, like Jon Hassell. There's an undertow of nordic rather than raga though. 6.2 is a threnody - contemplative, measured and stately in progress.

6.3 - Pitter-patter, like shards of broken glass being swept up, note clusters jabbed like Miles Davis played his 70s organ (from one trumpet master to another)... in fact 6.3 does recall "He Loved Him Madly" from Get Up With It. Bass stalks likeMax Schreck'sshadow cast large on a moonlit wall. Mood is pensive bordering on frightened/haunted. Is Nosferatu Supersilent's favourite film? Eight minutes in and 6.3 is rent by a drumroll like a clap of thunder and the atmosphere ratchets up massively before eventually fading out.

6.4 - Starts out with a satisfied, open, almost hopeful aspect. Gradual buildup to tidalwave proportions of sound which come on like a warmhearted eulogy.

6.5 - Like the anodised metal of a 1950s-envisaged spaceship. Like the slipstream of that craft as it forges through the atmosphere. The sound of new speeds attained.

6.6 - Arve sings in a supernatural, keening voice accompanied by distorting piano. He or another band member whistles while a chill synthwind blows. Becalmed and closing.

Much has been made of Supersilent's silence. The minimal aesthetic of their album sleeves and their lack of communication when not performing, means they are sometimes seen solely as taciturn; a band with nothing to say - either to each other or the wider world. This would be a great misjudgement . Supersilent's output is engaging, powerful and beautiful. This album is no exception. Building on their excellent reputation in left-field electronic circles, 6 also has hints of the spaces in the soundtracks to Westerns, the timbre of Dupre's output or the epic rise and fall of a Godspeed You Black Emporror side. Supersilent 6 will speak to fans of many types of music and they will listen, love and cherish it.

It was with some trepidation that I bought and listened to this rather remarkable album.

While Aarset, Molvaer and Wesseltoft each take the baton of Electric miles Davis and Funky Herbie Hancock somewhere fresh this collective seem to have Brian Eno and robert Fripp as precursors.

There are some rich harmonies, bizarre electronics and an ambience that seems to me to be utterly urban and contemporary.

Supersilent - who are these guys?! Listening to this stuff reminds me of the kind of rambling music I get in my head when I'm dreaming. Sounds like a joke, but actually makes a serious point - this stream of consciousness style of musical improvisation comes from a deep and sometimes dark place in the human psyche. This does mean that they are relating directly to a part of your brain that certain other types of music (ahem!) do not reach. It conjures up serious beauty at times and at others it can sound pretty disturbing. Whichever, this is sonic landscaping that would not be out of place in a Tate Modern installation. Sometimes bland, sometimes intense. Very textural, very filmic. Always challenging, always evocative. Not wallpaper - unless you are the kind of person that likes the kind of wallpaper that demands attention. I have heard similar things in works by Brian Eno, parts of Keith Jarrett's Spheres, and maybe elements of similar ideas in Philip Glass's soundtrack for Koyaanisqatsi - all of which I like. Your call ....
