Product Description

First series of the television sitcom, starring Rob Brydon as Dr Paul Hamilton, a brilliant astronomer who takes a position at a remote Australian observatory. With his wife and family, he has to overcome the new climate and the unfamiliar culture of the Outback, as well as the eccentricities of his weird new colleagues. Episodes are: 'The Black Hole'; 'God, Are You Out There'; 'When You Wish Upon a Star'; 'Venus Rising'; 'Unity'; and 'Where Men Are Men'.

Synopsis

Swapping rainy England for sunny Australia, Paul Hamilton leaves his dreary job, dreary girlfriend and dreary sex life behind. Hired by the Royal Australian Observatory to be the new gas expert, the geographical shift has Paul loving life again. However, things turn out to be more difficult than he thought. It's not that the job is particularly difficult; it's Paul who makes it difficult. Killing his new colleagues' pet snake, insulting the locals and needing to be rescued from an ill-advised midday walk in the bush isn't really a good way to spend your first day. Could things get any worse for Paul? Will ther be any chance of redemption in the Australian outback?

Follows our hero's integration into the team of stunningly bright social misfits manning an Australian observatory. All the characters screw up in their own special ways, from episode to episode, but no one has to be predictably the loser every time, not even our hero, despite his pathetic efforts to win the love & lust of his fiercely competent colleague, that's the one engaged to a psychopathic astronaut... A great mixture of interesting characters, with science, sex, and the pub,.. oh, and a lurking risk of death. Quirky, but excellent.

I missed series 1 on TV, but was hooked on series 2. So glad it's on DVD as it's so funny and uncomplicated. The Aussie's offbeat way of poking fun at themselves so compliment Rob Brydon's comedy. I can't wait for series 2 to be released.

I saw a couple episodes of this show on a public TV station affiliated with the University of Florida. What a hoot it was! Luckily I found the DVD on amazon.co.uk, so my wife and I have been able to enjoy all six episodes of series 1. We're hoping that series 2 will be released, too. The show has a great ensemble cast. We don't otherwise get to see much of them here in the states.

I am not usually a Rob Brydan fan but this is hysterical. Brydon plays Paul a very British, clumsy, twit who following a rather disasterous interview goes to work for an observatory in the Australian outback. Thsi series just makes me cry with laughter, it's quite gentle but very funny.

This is the best comedy I have found in years , the cast work as a whole, fantastic script lovely dialogue, I laughed until I dropped, where is season 2. The best Rob Brydon has ever done -- far superior to anything he has done since. Most of our friends have bought a copy, the question is who will wear theirs out first.
Every bit as good as porridge - that is saying something - possibly the best TV comedy since Porridge. That includes Blackadder.

I really enjoyed this series when I first saw parts of it on PBS in the States and got myself a copy. I've been waiting patiently ever since for the 2nd year to be issued. Anybody have a clue?

I am so glad my partner insisted on getting cable TV or I would have missed seeing one of the funniest shows of the decade - possibly the century.
It is true that the characters are fairly two dimensional and the storylines are in no way complex, but it is this simplicity that makes the show such a hoot. And don't think it is all so predictable; while you're busy laughing at the more obvious humour, something totally unforseen can come from left of centre and set you off again.
I loved this show so much I spent 18 months waiting for it to be released on DVD and then trying to find someone who could send it to Australia for me!
I'm here now because I was checking to see if Season 2 had been released on DVD, yet. NO such luck. But I'll keep looking.
