A novel based on the tv show supernatural, about two brothers who hunt monsters. This tells an all new story not seen on tv and is set during at an unspecified point during the fifth season of the show.
It offers very little information for those who aren't familiar with the show. But since the only ones likely to read this are fans who'll know all they need to know about it already, that shouldn't be a problem.
It runs for two hundred and ninety eight pages, containing thirty eight relatively short chapters and an epilogue.
It sees the Winchester brothers investigate deaths during an american civil war re-enactment. At the same time, their ally rebel angel castiel is in town questing for a very special individual. And Sam has had a bad dream about his destiny.
Everything comes together in a fight for control of a very special item, and a demonic end game...
The characterisation of the regular characters is spot on and you can really imagine both of them saying the dialogue here. The prose is good and clear and readable and things really do fly by for the first third of the book as the Winchesters investigate what's going on. The writer has done their research very well and the world of military re-enactments is created in excellent detail.
The scale of things after that does get bigger than anything a tv budget would ever allow and despite an exciting climax it isn't quite as involving as the first third of the book was. But there are good plot developments and a few surprises in regards to other characters, and it does manage to wrongfoot the reader very well on several occasions.
All in all an above average read for a tv tie in and well worth it for fans of the show.
